Dixie Chicks

You can help me with genetics when you get it all figured out, lol!

If I ever get it figured out I'd be happy too! I am making progress, but every time I think I've got one part I've lost another, lol. /D

noooo need to be sorry it's a great topic!! I just personally trying not to dig too deep cuz I can spend days n days with that stuff it really captures my brain and fascinates me lol @Sharps Big 50
has been trying to convince me we need to move to TN....I am not buying it wayyy to much snow and stuff lol and lots of heat...beautiful area though we plan on going back doing lots more exploring there e hit a couple caverns there last year was great the names of them elude me atm though lol... whats CCL I am not totally up on my chicken Initials yet lol sure I have plenty you can see the sound from my porch :)

I love the Sound! I was born in Mt. Vernon, spent a lot of time on Rosario growing up! We really don't get much snow, but a lot of sleet, blech!
The caverns you went to were prolly in Kentucky maybe? Does Mammoth Cave sound familiar? We went last year and loved it!
CCL is Crested Cream Legbar, and I don't know a lot of the acronyms yet either. :D

children are hard to come by at my work... but I utilize the remote start each and every day in the winter!

@hennible I use straw and shavings on the coop floor and straw in the nest boxes.

@Amberjem I too realized Orpingtons aren't pea combed when I looked at my poor roosters. Only one has a discolored tip so far *knock on wood three times*. This year I am focusing on switching to having more Chanteclers, get rid of the Orpington Roosters and let the pullet and Wyandotte pullet live out their lives here.

could be I use pine shavings about like 6 bucks at the feed store for  I forget exact amount but it's huge amount lol...........Part of why I wanted peacomb birds.. I somehow realized in last few days orpingtons didnt have peacombs I dont know HOW come I missed that...maybe because I usually associate Englands weather as good for my area in the garden...musta just assumed...my lil full orpington chick is doing good though....seems to be the low dude on the pole  and the orpington and orpington cross were my last hatchers...I was surprised one hatched I had seriously questioned it when I went into lockdown  hadnt realized they were such lazy hatcher chicks before though lol

400

These are $14 a piece not to bad... But that hay is free :(

we use children :D

@hennible
I think that dry wood chips/shavings are way better than hay or straw at keeping things dry.  You should be able to get it free from any sawmill or lumberyard if you bag it yourself.  Some places charge if they have to bag for you, but usually it is very little.

Also, any wood worker might have a bunch.  (but ask if he was doing cedar ... too aromatic for the chicken coop.... or if he sanded down varnished wood, or soemthing else toxic, etc.)

Good idea I'll poke around... Oddly I love to shovel... Just not snow

Glad to hear about the humidity Hennible.
Bitter cold here, really miss the warmth of home

Hey babe! Miss you madly.
Yep the boys look a bit happier today... The chickens not the kids. Kids miss ya.

Quote: The Easter Hatchalong will be gearing up when you return!! Perfect timing to join the fun!! Chicken eggs need to be set on March 14 to hatch the day before Easter so cute fuzzies are on hand to welcome the Easter Bunny! The thread is usually up on February 1st!! Save the date!! Can you tell I'm excited about it? It is because it signals spring and the end of the dark winter (okay, not as dark as Al, BC or vehve but the days are shorter and I need my daylight!)!

Speaking of......after tonight, our lows at night will all be single digits or negatives for the next 9 days, I'm talkin' Fahrenheit negatives here! Daytime high on Wednesday won't even make positive numbers .....

-4F = -20C for a high? This is Illinois for crying out loud not the tundra!!

ok question for you: What should my coop humidity level be for a snowy/ rainy day??? I'm at 75% and I could smell ammonia in there. No smell on dry days. I'm still figuring out humidity thing like when to open more vents.

Oh, and I don't think that there is a level that you can shoot for..... a rainy day is just going to be horridly humid. If you need numbers, make sure that the inside of your coop never has humidity that is higher than the outside.
