Ugh! It's 28f here now and has been all day, not sure what it's gonna be tonight. Supposed to warm up for a day then go back down. Glad it doesn't get too bad here, Idaho was brutal for me. -45f and it froze the diesel in the trucks, no thanks! lol

About outhouses and winter, using a outhouse in -20C isn't a problem as long as you have a polystyrene seat - don't make the mistake on sitting down on a plastic one, that will make you leap up and hit your head in the ceiling. The outhouse provides protection from wind, so it's pretty nice. At least it's a lot better than just going in the forest. And if it's an actively used outhouse, it will provide some heat by itself.

Quick outhouse story.....when my oldest son was just over 2 years old, we were visiting his father's family in Kentucky. My exs aunt did not have an indoor toilet. My newly potty trained son said he had to go to the bathroom. My ex says, "Put your coat on" DS says, "I don't want to go outside, I have to go to the bathroom".......poor little guy....was not used to the two going together....especially at Christmas time in the cold!

I have about a week to decide if I want chicks before we head out on vacation. I'd want chicks if broody doesn't hatch out anything and if she stays broody...

Question: do you find your chickens make a difference in the mosquito population around your house?

I think my chickens keep the general bug population down......I have bat houses for bats that keep my mosquito population down.
