1- me and my crazy venting obsession... Ravyn, you gonna cut a big screened over window into one of those walls? You probably want a giant sized one, like at least half the size of a wall, since you live in a super hot climate... and muggy too, right? Isn't Tennessee muggy?

2- plastic panel as roof... marvelous idea, if it is in the run type section of the coop. I wouldn't like them close to or over a roost since they have close to zero insulation value... and you also know that the light right on the rooster's head is going to make him crow like crazy at 1, 2, 3, and 4 am all summer long.

Quote: mosquitos.... at least the ones up here (so maybe yours too @BriardChickens ) can't fly in wind. So, if you keep your grass cut pretty short, they won't get close.

@hennible

talk lots about greenhouses....

OK, do you have hot summers? I don't, stays pretty cool here. I actually think that the best greenhouse here would be one with a solid roof and a solid back wall, both super insulated. Then only the south, west and east walls plastic or glass.

One other thing that was just brought up with the Alaska people, were underground greenhouses. Supposedly they get super hot, maybe because there is so much insulation from the ground, and of course all of the wind is blocked (a common big problem up here is cold wind). Anyway, for an underground greenhouse you would dig out the entire spot, then line with those insulated blocks, the ones that look like concrete blocks, but are solid insulation and used for below ground house buildings.

This first one, I would make a much steeper roof, this one you know they have to shovel.

I like this one, but again, I would put a super sloping roof....

this one goes along with a more in depth article: http://www.peakprosperity.com/wsidblog/85009/walipini-style-greenhouses

This one has a GREAT roof angle!!!

something with insulated walls, but above ground:

One other thing.... if you are not growing in pots, but directly in the ground, I think that raised beds make a big difference.

Some people that are really into their greenhouse growing, and live where the summers are cool, do all sorts of stuff to warm up the dirt. Pretty much different ways of radiant floor heating, but in garden beds.

Thank you so much AL those are all designs I've seen and forgotten about good refresher course... It Does get hot here in the summer sometimes really bloody hot and then other years it rains all summer there is no consistency to the weather here...bothersome...
Oh that's great, I'm gonna look more at the design options you put up...thank you

you never had a pedicure before omgosh how great you got to experience it.. it's one of my guilty sins hehehe glad your power is back ona nd your back..ok well sleep well

I never have. Don't like anyone messing with my feet. Extremely tickleish. My dad used to tickle us girls to the point of pain. No one tickles me anymore. I'm now considered a dangerous weapon if tickled. I'd probably get arrested if I had a pedicure.

Question: do you find your chickens make a difference in the mosquito population around your house?
Mine do. We have a very shallow pond and the girls love going down and cleaning up. They've made a dent in the crayfish too.

My OH decided the power tools were a good investment when he found out I knew basic construction, he is a car guy only, lol. He says he was right, I do all our renovation and building. I think I got the short end of THAT one!

Yep, milder than when I lived in Skagit Valley. I live almost dead center in TN, an hour and 20 mins south of Nashville. It looks a LOT like the Skagit area did about 20 years ago, but warmer. Just missing the Sound.

I am up from my nap and posting this before i read the Hundred Bizzilan posts I missed... LOL

Ok meatloaf is in the oven I got the recipe off the interent from:
http://www.realfooddudes.com/mouth-watering-meatloaf/

Ingredients: Substitutions because I didnt have the ingredient
3 Cups cubed sourdough bread
1 whipped egg
2/3 Cup raw milk buttermilk
1 Tbl Dijon mustard worshester sauce
2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp fresh ground pepper
4 Tbl fresh chopped basil
2 Tbl fresh chopped thyme Dried thyme equivalent
1/2 tsp dried nutmeg Cinnamon
1 medium onion finely chopped
1/2 Cup chopped celery
1/2 Cup chopped parsley Dried Parsley... not enough but all I had about a teaspoon
12 slices cooked and crumbled bacon NO BACON didnt want to dirty a pan
2 lbs grass fed ground beef 2.5 pounds very lean
4 Tbl melted butter Bacon Grease

Combine the whipped egg, milk, and cubed bread pieces. Let this rest for at least 15 minutes so the bread soaks up the egg and milk. Then use a large fork or potato masher to mash the mixture until there no more large chunks of bread. Add the Dijon, salt, pepper, basil, thyme, nutmeg, onion, celery, parsley, and bacon to the mixture. Add other ingredients and Mix well.

In a large bowl, pour the melted butter over the meat. Mix the butter into the meat. Then add the bread and spice mixture to the meat. Mix well and form into a loaf in a loaf pan.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Cook the meatloaf for approximately 1 hour. I like to turn on the broiler for the last 10 minutes to darken the outer crust a bit.

Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. I recommend serving this with your favorite mashed potato recipe.

We will see what my tweaks did.... the smell coming form the oven smells Middle Eastern.... LOL

Not doing the broiler.... I have it high up in the oven should give it a good crisp.

With regard to mixing the meat loaf I approach it as if I were folding whipped eggs into a batter.... I use a large spoon and scoop under the meat grabbing some of the bread and veggie mix and fold... it produces a homogenous mixture without over working...
