Not to jump in here ,,this discussion moves so fast ? ......but I have used cedar as bedding with no ill effects , aromatic cedar at that ? also pine is a very common bedding material here , most comes from Alberta , but as always something new has come up .........flax ? shredded to bit's , used a lot by small farmers as bedding from horses to chickens , apparently it soaks up moisture or something , keeps for a long time ?
Oh please jump in we love a fresh set of eyes. Awesome you have had excellent results.... Oooohhh a new bedding Flax.... Have you heard of hemp? Its just now becoming available through a source in Florida.... I have used in the past mainly pine Shavings for my horse's bedding... I only discovered Rice hulls because I was at a boarding facility that did not allow pine shavings... you had to use stuff that wouldnt compress into a crude wood over time. Their list of allowed bedding was short
Micro shavings
Wood pellets
Rice hulls....
The micro was wayyy too expensive... and the Wood pellets looked too much like food for my wary eye (for horses that is) So I went to Rice hulls.
My horses corral was a naaasty stinky mess and the stable owners wouldnt let me bring my own sand in I had to buy it from them.... then get on a waiting list for it to be installed.... NOT on MY WATCH.... So the corral was 24 x 24 and draft horse mares pee alot.... So even during the summer she had at least three nasty places that never dried out.... I got tired of it. She wasnt laying down to rest and her hind legs were stocking up something horrible.
So I bit the bullet and bought five bales of rice hulls... Piled em up in the center of her corral.... She Whoofled down (ate) lots of it till she realized it was more work than it was worth for treats... she dug it out and layed down finally on the pile... I could here her satisfied Groan from a hundred feet away. Yep it got rained on but the top surface always appeared and felt dry.
Here rain is an unnusual thing... So bedding for horses is for the most part... outside. I was very happy with the results. and Kept the use of rice hulls for home and for chicken and goat bedding.
We have to use what is available....
