Dixie Chicks

ARG! :barnie you entered the coop contest too! There is no way I can beat you, you have an EXCELLENT run! Ah well, at least I don't have to worry about sprucing up my coop page any more. :idunno congrats by the way, your coop really is wonderful! (I CAN be a good sport) :D when she had given it to me, it was just a little sprout.....
Thank you!!! I'm just so excited to see all the entries that will be posted. Always looking for a better idea!! But you do have a good chance of winning, considering it cost you. $ 0.00. I don't even want to finish adding mine up! And keep sprucing up the page. Take a few winter snowy pics and such. As for weeds...kids kind of grow like that too.
what is everyone's least favorite thing to do with the chickens? and why? how do you make it more fun for yourself as well?
Culling. I just hate to think of it even. I know it must be done at times but so far DSO has been my go to guy for that.
I have always wanted something like that @Amberjem either in my entryway, as a welcome mat, or on a garden path.
I would really love to do this in the center of a beautiful garden.
yep.... and now that I am collecting eggs to hatch.... my Marans have stopped laying!!! :hit
Time for more light!!!!

I decided tonight when I seen the backs ripped off a couple of my hens that the RIR roo I have saved back for breeding, he is going to freezer camp. I am up to 9 roosters that need butchered ASAP. The weather is not in my favor for this task.

Least favorite thing about chickens....cleaning the coop.
argh I wasnt refering to your comment when I posted my question.... I have seen some ppl when their roosters are overly enthusiastic..be removed for a day or two then returned and it was said their behavior was more mannerly to the hens...

Butchering. Everything is funner with beer so...
I had one of my Easter eggers with a bound crop and had to force puke it after reading how on chicken chick, it was super gross and I think it died for a few seconds once. But it lived and is healthy now! That was probably the worst.
to be honest I am hoping n praying I dont have to deal with that one lol

I agree @chickwhispers I thought would be kinda kewl to do lil mosaics along a garden path as well...or even do something like that with a sun dial

Ooh yeah, choosing who goes and who stays is hard. I had all sorts of roos last summer. I only kept the one wellie roo I wanted for breeding. Offing the heads of those awesome roadrunner polish roos was hard, they looked so cool. I had a white leghorn roo and almost kept him so I could breed some pyle leghorns out of the brown ones. Now that I decided on adding three more breeds this spring I'm glad I didn't keep him.

Picking up body parts after a predator attack.... Heads wings whole dead chickens/guineas.... My son got wierded out when I picked em up bare handed.... I would have picked them up live without wearing gloves... No difference dead parts.

I lost forty out of fifty Guinea Tweenagers... specially ordered from a breeder up north for my starter flock.... gone.

Lost my whole flock of chickens last year.... no parts found.

I probably dont deserve to raise them any more.

Any one ever remove spurs?... I was thinking even without real problems with my Roos it might be nice for the hens.
I was thinking of that watching matty n butler staring each other down the other day...figured have to do some research seem to recall my grandma doing that with her roo

Quote: Usually by 8-9 months....the problem is they start chasing the pullets and hens by 4 to 5 months

and crowing to show-off so the crowing contests can be a problem. I live in the middle of nowhere (rural area between a town of 400 and "city" of 2400) but I do have neighbors that tolerate my chickens (even like them) but I don't want to give them any reason to not like them........not to mention my DH isn't exactly a fan of my hobby so I try to keep the crowing down. I do try and place my most spectacular cockerels with two or three pullets to people who want to start an Icelandic flock of their own. That makes it easier to let them go....but those opportunities are few.

This rooster has been separated before. He has no nice in him at all. He is mean to everyone and everything. My Speckled Sussex rooster is the only one that will and can stand up to him. The RIR is even mean to the little dog when he goes out with me. And everyone likes the little dog

This rooster has worn his welcome. I put him in a dog crate until I can sharpen the ax.
