Dixie Chicks

Good morning!

I really like all of the stuff I stuffed into the addition to my house. if I could sum it up...

1. I like all of the stuff that 'The Not So Big House' chick wrote.

2. SIGHT LINES, ultra important.  I worked hard to make sure that whenever you turned a corner, you can see out a window.  This way, even in a tiny cramped house, the house feels big, because the sight line lets your eyes see outside.  I even have a small window in my closet.  When you look into my closet, you look out the tiny window to the outside.  Pretty blue sky, nice view, and it is located so that I do NOT loose any storage space.  But having the window there makes a huge difference.  I highly recommend it.

I made sure that the closet in the kids room is behind the door, NOT seen, but you do see right out the window.

Also, for my bedroom, I put in a half wall when you enter the room specifically to hide the dressers and all of the junk that I knew would always be there.

Other big things....

standard builders light fixtures are silly things that only take a max of 60 watts.  I wanted things that took 100 watts.... you can always put in less, and I WANT LIGHT!  Not sure if that applies with all of the totally strange light bulbs now available.

Other thing, OUTLETS!  The code here in Alaska, says that they have to be every some odd feet along the wall of the room.  However, this means that often the plugs all end up behind the beds.

I hate that.

Make sure the plugs end up where you want them, NOT behind the bed or the dresser, put the plug in an accessible spot.

Also... seeing that you are in a frozen dark wasteland....

I really like the house plans where a big mud porch area is hidden behind the door... where you can hide YOUR coats and hats and boats (all all of the kids), but there is a neat spot for the guests to put their stuff.

Also, the people who don't have an arctic entry/mud porch are crazy, or billionaires.

Good points, thanks Alaskan! We definitely want a mud room off the garage. As for windows: we saw a gorgeous house with big bay windows to the front and back! Talk about light, the floor plan worked for us too but I think we'll have a house with big bay windows to the front only. It would put the kitchen into a slightly better spot.

Would be lovely if you found that link, curious!

Went out to collect eggs this morning. My wyandotte was still sitting on the nest. She just screamed at me as soon as I started reaching in. Sounded like a crow... I've never hears a chicken make that kind of noise...

Good luck with your house! No matter how many times you check your list there's always something to add to the "list"! X2 on all of Alaskan's points. One in particular about the mudroom. No matter how cute the cubbies and the hooks and stuff. I know there would always be times I would just want to shut the door.

And I hope your wyandotte straightens up and flys right, well or justs quits being broody if you don't want her to be. My 2 silkies are at it again. No rooster. I just wish it was more like spring! and warmer!

Read up again on the health benefits of black meat chicken. It contains way less calories than regular chicken. 100grams of black meat chicken has 2grams fat, regular chicken 8grams. It contains high levels of the amino acid carnosine, an antioxident. Black chicken has double the amount of carnosine than regular chicken. Cabbage Hill worked with their genetics to breed for the highest levels of carnosine. It is anti aging for one, will make you live longer. It also blocks heavy metals from the brain and prevents dementia. Boosts eye health, prevents cataracts. Nutralizes free radicals and repairs damaged cells.Protects organs and helps to prevent diabetes and other diseases. Reverses the aging process. No wonder Chinese people live long lives. Silkie chickens are also fibromelanistic.
ARG!

Now you have me wanting to add yet another breed to my flock..... tell me it will make my hair grow back and I am totally sold!

Vehve I read it as you found a bagel... Haha.

It just begs the question if a bagel falls in the forest will Felix eat it...

@BriardChickens

I really like how my addition turned out, I actually thought of everything, and everything worked out..... except maybe I should have had them install a floor drain ........ for when the kids flood the bathroom or when the washer leaks all over.

Anyway, I also planned the windows in the master bedroom area to be the perfect height, so that Spouse and I can walk around naked and don't have any window coverings, and no one outside can see private body parts.

Convenient!

I even planned outlets so that night-lights could be plugged in in logical places.

I like house design/house plan stuff.... so much fun
