Here's the little lady in question, sitting in our front seat.



Also, our last hope for having a lady among our chicks managed to get herself pecked today. Nasty looking wound on her neck, all the skin has been peeled off of the left side. We took her in, cleaned it with betadine, sprayed some vetericyn on it and smeared it with vetramil. The chick is eating, and seems to be quite okay. It's in a brooder in our living room at the moment, and just now when I picked it up so that Karin could smear vetramil on the wound, it started flapping like crazy, sending bedding everywhere... this is going to get messy. The wound doesn't seem to bother the chick, and it's pretty active, so it should heal nicely. Reintegrating it will be a pain though, I suspect.

Well, we'll see if it pulls through first. I might be fooling myself thinking it might be a pullet, so we'll see how it goes, might not even be worth the hassle putting the chick through reintroduction if it doesn't seem like smooth sailing immediately.

I'll just bug you about this though with that many boys what kind of flooring would be the best?

That is a tricky question....

Because the problem is, do you want the boys to break, or the floor to break?? One of them is gonna have to give......

I have tile in the mud porch, hall and bathroom. I picked high quality tile that has the same color all the way through, so if it chips you don't notice. Also, I looked for one with the best friction rating when wet. I actually wanted to buy the tile with the bumpy surface that has super traction even when wet.... I had installed it in my bathroom in Texas. But, I couldn't remember what name it had, and couldn't find it.

The tile has held up well, after about 7 years I think I only have one chip, and that was from a very heavy ax being dropped onto the tile.

For the boy's bedroom, I knew they would be falling out of bed all of the time (and they do), so I wanted something that would be less likely to break them.

I picked out the thickest plastic flooring I could find. I chose that "Fiber Flooring" I think is what it is called. Anyway, it is a giant sheet, and it is supposed to be a 'floating' floor.

However, over the years it has gotten ripples in the surface... I think from the boys pushing the giant bunk beds back and forth??? I have one, maybe two tiny damage spots... but actually not bad. Again, about 7 years.

NEVER, NEVER carpet anything, EVER.

I think the 5 second rule applies with a good bagel on the forest floor. We just don't tell vehve when the 5 seconds started...

I had one chick that had the entire back of the neck peeled open. Actually, I was very impressed that the chick still had full mobility.

Anyway, we just washed off the wound, and then kept her in a cage by herself while it healed. We did NOT doctor it, or antibiotic it, or whatever it.

She healed up wonderfully. And what is so amazing is that there is no bare spot. She looks perfect (I haven't felt all over to see if there is any kind of scaring).

So.... I don't think you need to doctor the chick.... she will be fine. However, food and water are important.

Actually, mine was a bit stressed with being all alone, so I put her cage in one end of my bathtub. The bathtub had my half grown quail. Then she settled down, since she was no longer alone. But she was still in her own cage, so no one would get hurt.

mudrooms are just way too necessary here... Mudroom, a Place that you can Theoretically stop the dirt for making the rest away in your house and a great place to store all that stupid seasonal outerwear... I need a bigger mudroom.

Al, yeah, definitely no antibiotics. But it looks pretty nasty, basically the whole left side of the neck is bare on a inch long area, all the skin has peeled off. So topical products it is.
