I've never tried rabbit, how does it compare? Anyway, DH would never give in to rabbit but if you leave them alone they can get quite mean! Which would be a pro on ease of butchering..

Yup, they need a lot of support if you let them grow too quickly. I started fertilizing a bit too early last year. I think I'll skip that step this year.

The only thing I know about Tomatoes is when you plant the new plants into the ground you can bury the stem about two inches deeper than the original pot... Makes the tomatoes grow more roots along the stem making the tomato stronger and produce more.

When Mom planted tomatoes in Las Vegas they took over the fence line and grew year round even in winter.

You can plan your tomatoes like this also

The benefits of this are encouraging more roots and your main root ball ends up away from the stem so you can side dress with composts easier, also a little bit easier to weed with the trowel because your roots are off to the side...

Deb, another thing to do is to re-pot often. Ideally you want to go through 3-4 pots before they get to their final container. When you've put them in a new pot, they will first seem to halt growth while they extend their roots, then they start shooting up like crazy again.

Personally I try to do as few transplant as possible because every time we transplant your stress of your plants a little bit some species handle it really well and some don't

Sam, oh, I thought they grow better with the re-potting. At least that's been my experience.

If your pots to small yes... But if you start with a good size pot in the first place you can reduce your number of transplants and the amount of shock your plant experience. When ever possible I like to direct seed, it always amazes me how much better the direct seeded plants do over the transplants... Even when the seed times differ by a month the direct seeded plants will surpass my transplants...

Maybe I'll do some experimentation. Although, then I can't put them in my mini indoor greenhouse.

Dang, oil prices are starting to affect work. We knew it was coming. Overtime is being cut down as well as that we are no longer working Sundays...The good news is no lay offs (yet)
