Dixie Chicks

*nudge* @minihorse927 you noticed how she said she was going to get pictures but came back and hasnt posted any yet?? you think she is trying to draw out our anticipation and the suspense???????? :D :D

Very rare... if you go to ladycat's page, she has her breed list and *I think* there is a link to an article on them... she sells their eggs rarely, but threw some in some muddy egg BIN's...

Yep, that's the only reason I figure 1 of those *might* be Ermine...the eggs in the muddy eggs auction I won were not marked, as she had not planned on selling them. Sure glad she did. By the way, I chose NOT to wash them, and the dirtier ones hatched just as well as the clean ones!

Violet laid for me all winter then she had her two broody spells and had a break... part of why I wanted the different breeds is ...I figured ones who will lay great in summer will slow when another speeds up in winter ect...I bet your super anxious to get those eggs but she probly deserved the break and the eggs should be all the more healthy for her rest and getting back into top condition...did you get an incubator yet?

That's why I got the brown leghorns, I figured with them I would get guaranteed eggs. They quit for a little bit but are going now, so between them and the polish I'm getting mostly white eggs

they taste the same I guess. The best were the EE, now they are random, and the one that was laying olive eggs I haven't had any lately

.
Incubator...I shouldn't keep putting it off. I was dead set on a Brinsea 20, but I would like the opportunity to hatch more if I want to so now I'm debating a Hovabator. When I start getting those dark brown spotted eggs again I'll have to decide.

SO does anyone vaccinate? and how do you go about the process? What is your general opinion about vaccination? why? or why not?

hey @hennible I know you ferment your feed do you use a organic feed? have you tried the eggs from ferment fed and non ferment fed chickens did YOU find them different?

Well, sorry guys... for some reason I can't find my pics of my trio as chicks, but found some similar for reference...

Now, most hatcheries/feed stores sell Welsummers as straight run because a lot of the lines have lost the autosexing trait... I got lucky getting mine, and I know of at least on other BYCer (lives in TN too) who has an autsexing line as well...

Welsummers have wildtype chick down, very similar to Cream Legbars, but they aren't barred so no head spots on boys... but the girls have a very defined, dark eye stripe/eyeliner and usually a very crisp, dark V on top of the head... boys' eye stripe/eyeliner will be lighter/fuzzier and less defined, and the top of the head usually has a narrower/broken V...

Pics are not mine, used to show examples only...

Girl on left, boy on right... this is a lesser defined autosexing line...

400

Girl on left, boy on right... this shows better autosexing, note darker girl with crisper lines between color shades...

Again, girl on left and boy on right... very clear between the 2, yes?

My trio came out like the bottom 2 pics, very clear differences, but is easiest to tell when you have at least 1 of each gender in a hatch...

Hope this helps! :)

Nope on the organic
Not using FF consistently....
They like FF a lot more than dry but I always have dry for them so I can enjoy the crazy crap life throws my way with out worrying... So I can't say anything about the eggs flavour etc...

Good luck with that............the choices and such are so overwhelming with the incubators and such........pfft and expensive......I havent even figured what I might like cuz it's so expensive and not sure if it's worth it to me at this point plus my 20 dollar DIY incubator has upheld itself a heck of alot better then I have seen other ppl with their expensive units.... and I think I would like to modify it make a larger one so I can use a egg turner..

so my neighbor dropped in on me the other day and I was coming back from the chickens so had my hands full of eggs... she saw the olive egg and said to her 20ish year old daughter see the green egg that means it's old.........the darker green they are the older they are.... I said no it was just laid feel it's still warm out the chickens butt lol @Sharps Big 50 said I should have told her no that the older the eggs are the lighter they get until they are white :p
