Dixie Chicks

I've got chain link surrounding all the runs here and the main run is made of chainlink. It definitely keeps the dogs and coyotes from getting in from the sides.

Wow, Deb, you can draw!!!! Very nice.

Thanks I have been drawing for manufacturing for many many years... being able to hand sketch is essential. I was told once I would never be an artist... So I became a Draftsman combining what art skills I had and the technical end of spacial relationships.... and worked my way up to Manufacturing engineer...

So if any one here wants technical drawings done for a gadget or a widget to be built.... drop me a line.

Good for you!!!

With predators, I have not had any aside from a junior being taken by a hawk. I have 2 pens that I can't say are really really secure because they are fenced with wire that's 2x4 spacing, top as well. But the roost is in the center so nothing can grab a chicken.

I have only ever lost 2 to predators before this week... a young cockerel and pullet due to 2 possums... killed both and never had another problem til this week...

I been hit by Mountain lion, Bobcat, Coyote, Dogs, and Raccoons...

There is a family of Ravens that patrol so the Flying predators keep their distance with the exception of Owls.

Just about all the four footed predators can climb a dog kennel panel. if they are motivated enough.

so the new poultry house will be completely secure for the night.... every opening will be 1/2 inch or less. The whole yard will be hot wired top and bottom. The run will be secured with cattle panels and welded wire around the perimeter. And Aviary netting. For what its worth cats are very reluctant to walk around on anything flimsy... (due to research of keeping house cats in a yard) Raccons will be the only ones that may be an issue with the netting. But poultry would only be out in the run during the day.

Beer can, why giants and Langshans? I like them too!

I hope July is a safe time to ship because it's so hot. Maybe it's a good thing , I don't know.

Wasn't after the langshans, wanted SH's white j giants, they have a closed flock of Golda Miller line, they admit not SOP but I figured a good place to start, couldn't find any anywhere, people just don't seem to care about the whites ,breeders only seem to care about the black and blue and splash. If you read Maria Halls site, she gets $$$ for her chicks, she ended up with Golda Millers stock of blacks when she died. only a couple hatcheries have the whites and I didn't want theirs. There was a max order of ten of them and I needed 25 to complete a order, I don't know why I picked the Langshans but the more I read about them I think I made a good choice. Max order on blues was five, so I ordered them and ten blacks to complete the order. Hope I get them....

I love it.... does he turn its "I gotto run" mind off when you call him? even if its only to run to you then run back out?

deb
Yup!, Runs close enough that I think I can catch him and then GONE! Loves to run! I run too trying to catch him, he plays keep away with himself! Then he will come up to me with his tongue hanging out sideways like "what's your problem, here I am!" Grrr!

Same here, except no Mountain lion even though we have people that show trail cam pics all the time of ones THEY saw, until you google the pic and find it was in Colorado, Montana, etc. We do have lots of black bear though, but I think they are more interested in garbage cans, bird feeders and farm fields of corn.
I don't know what ate a bunch of mine, but dang, I was looking forward to eating a dark Cornish I had, never had one before, huge breast, and then it was gone....My coop and run is not predator proof so I say the dog is helping.

Ick
You just reminded me there is a cougar in my area... Bears aren't a big deal but Cougars scare the crap outta me...

Cougars are ok as long as their main prey are around... deer. I have only ever seen one.... very very early in the morning... crossing the highway. It was like a ghost... and it took me a moment to analyze what I just saw to realize it was a Mountain lion.

I have only seen Bob Cat twice... they too are invisible even when you are looking straight at them. You have to catch movement an ear twitch or a move of a foot... before you can make out their profile.

I had a bob cat take thirty chickens in thirty days.... Probably feeding kittens....

When I hunt State Land I see a lot of bobcat tracks, usually following snowshoe hare. Neighbor saw one by round bales across the road I believe him, he's not a liar, but haven't had any bother my chickens yet...I'm more worried of fishers, didn't know we had them here until I caught one on my trail cam in video devouring deer guts, put it up for coyotes, it was about five hundred yrds behind my house. Fishers scare me, not me but my chickens..
