Dixie Chicks

@perchie.girl , I didn't know you had welsummers! That was my pick chicken. I researched chickens before getting them and welsummer was the breed I was going to get. But then I got a phone call from a friend with chickens, and she had to get rid of them, and here I am. 3 years later and 145+ chickens. Not one of them a welsummer. How did that happen? LOL! You all have a great night. It's POURING RAIN HERE!-----------STILL-----------------AGAIN--------------------UGH!!!!!! I wish I could ship you some Deb.

were in the middle of a tropical storm that's dissipating... came up from Mexico... So today I been doing happy dancing...

I dont have any chickens any more.... long story... But I got my Welsummers from a hatchery in California called Redwing. They only sell to feed stores.

They were sturdy, calm and the largest fowl I have ever owned. I bought 25 through the feedstore... 20 girls and 5 boys... Lost one girl in shipping but I raised em up to past point of lay. First season I was getting an egg a day almost... and needless to say I was overwhelmed...

The roos were calm I did loose two so was left with three. Main roo was the biggest he was the boss... He watched over his hens with an aloof aire.... but let them other boys try to get a lick in and it was "ON" usually a chase no feathers pulled.

They all stayed together in a 12 x 6 enclosure no bad habits... so they take confinement very well. I must say they were the prettiest chickens I ever had.

When I go to restock It will be Wellies and Sumatras at first. There is a gal here in San Diego that has Creme legbar Americauna crosses that she calles super blue egglayer. I have seen them and ME Want... at least a trio.

I will have space for A LOT of chickens and Guinea fowl. the new poultry house will be 24 x 24 I want a completely covered (with aviary netting) run that will be 24 x 50+ The plus being the far end of the yard tapers.... But has some Eucalyptus trees for day time shade.

For what its worth Wellies did famously in the heat.

:caf Evening folk. I can't type due to a recent hornet sting right on my preferred thumb. Enjoyed reading though and catching up. (especially bout the chicken gun.) Yay for rain!

@Alaskan....I thought Jem's mate was returning to Whidby, not that they were moving elsewhere?

I have a mama hen in the house with two chicks. How long is that advisable? :D

As long as you can tolerate, lol... had to keep a couple broody's in the house with chicks for waaaay longer than I've wanted to... :/

jumbo eggs are good and I really dont need eggs all year long.... The guineas only lay during the summer... Sumatras are seasonal somewhat... But I want a few Wellies... and some silly foo foo polish and some silkies... Between all of them I would have more eggsies than a single person would need.

But I hope to make sustaining money from the poultry in Feathers and Keets and possibly Guinea hatching eggs...

I also want to make some jewelry for sale with Guinea feathers and rooster feathers... as well... even stuff you can gather up off the ground.

Even Dream Catchers and decorative window decorations.... Combining glass and copper wire and feathers and beads.

I haven't had Guinea's in about five years. But I still see a occasional feather in the coop or outside. Every time I see one I think, "wow were they pretty'. I miss them.........

Jem is finishing her move to Widby Island... They just didn't do it all in one big move.... So her man went back to get more stuff and drive it back to to Widby.

Deb... Loved your hummingbird comment. Those are a really cool creature.

Well... I did more today than I had scheduled

A bear tried to tear into my bantam coop... It broke up and messed up the ripple plastic sheet that I used in part of the coop.

-sigh-

It didn't get any chickens :ya

I decided to get the boys to screw up plywood and boards over the messed up area... So there is less light into the coop, but that wasn't the only light source, so not a horrid thing.

I sure am glad that it was a little black bear... Whew!

On a funny note.... Spouse cleaned out the fridge and found a bag of very long dead chicks...... Oops!

I must have tossed them in there so that they wouldn't start to smell before I did a dump run... And then totally forgot. I laughed and laughed! Spouse was NOT pleased and did NOT think it was funny. :lau I kept wondering where the horrid stench was coming from.

Alaskan, bummer 'bout the bear... glad your chooks are safe tho...

And don't you know you're supposed to store the dead bodies in the freezer not the fridge til dump run day?? :lau

Amusing how nobody spells Whidbey the same, lol... ;)

Well I am just glad too that the bear didnt try to peel a door off the house.... AND that was a black bear. My friend Julie who used to live On Kodiak had a bear skin rug in her living room. It was a Kodiac bear. Her dad shot... They said it was just a two year old... From the tip of his nose to the end of his tail he was a good seven feet....

And I KNOW they get bigger than that.

I want a coop like that!

Here's my story about smelly stuff......Many moons ago, I had an indoor cat (Sophia). She was a great cat even though I am not generally fond of cats. One day I started smelling this stench in the kitchen....? I cleaned everything, went over it all with bleach, still had the odor.
sickbyc.gif
Then next day I seen little white bug things on the floor. (I was in my 20s and am much wiser not, btw). I thought the cat must have worms. Went to the pet store, bought meds, treated Sophia for worms, wiped down the kitchen again, changed her litter pan. Next day, I found the bag of rotten potatoes that caused the whole ordeal

@perchie.girl , Our house is like a revolving door. Having 3 grown kids, their spouses, our family, friends, etc, at least 3 times a week someone stops in. One day an old friend stopped by unexpectedly. I was frantically shoving dishes in the oven. (WHY?! LOL!) Just to hide them. So, you know, I forgot about those darn dishes until a couple days later when I heated up the oven to make dinner......I opened the oven door and flames shot out
ep.gif
It had melted a plastic spaghetti strainer, some cups and other stuff. Luckily everything turned out ok, but I will NEVER put anything in my oven to hide it again. What a cleanup job I had... LOL!

OH gawd i am still laughin.... been there done that with the potatoes.... Nothing smells worse... Poor cat... bwhahahaha...

I learned a while back to open the oven and look in first. There is no room in this dinky kitchen for storing pots and pans. and I cant lean over to look in the cupbords under the counter and back around the corner. so I put em in the oven. I use the oven very rarely because it barely works... Grandma needs a new one but the space is too small for the newer ones. house isnt that old but the builder must have gotten a goood deal on ranges...

Been known to hide a pan IN the dishwasher too.... makes me feel good to know I am not the only one.

You know.... I wipe dishes out with a dirty paper towel to get the big chunks and the grease and put them in the dishwasher... Why wash twice right? Grandma full on washes each dish before it goes in.... so this makes me a bad house keeper.....among a few other things.....
lau.gif
.... that I wont admitt.

Hey mom didnt teach me how to clean house.... her idea of cleaning a really dirty pot was to slip it into the garbage....been known to do that as well. I remember one time complaining to a girlfriend about a roasting pan that I had scrubbed and scrubbed on. she asked... "did you try a brillo pad?"
ep.gif
what-a-concept.... it was then that I realized I might be lacking some training.
