...I am resisting thoughts of new coops I am resisting..resist, resis, resi, ressssssssssssing!

Alaskan, tried to count tonight, impossible. Chickens are still freaked about this morning & I had to physically catch about 40 of them to get them in the coop. They went to roost in trees, along the fence, everywhere but in the coop. Tell you the truth, I have no idea how many I am suppose to have....:idunno

welp patty the white brahma cross has gone broody again...tomorrow am going to mark all the eggs under her and let her go she has been sitting for two days now....has about nine eggs...gonna see if she will do the whole job broody to raising, she did a great job adopting and raising up the first hatchlings I incubated and put under her

the broody who was brooding when I left she sat however the eggs "disappeared" according to my friend looking after stuff...

looks like the first hatchings this year all cockerels... getting close to processing time for em...

This morning at 4am, I went outside to check on chickens as normal. It stormed last night, so I was doubtful anything bothered them. I shined the light in the coop because the light inside the coop was out....? I seen there were no chickens on one of the roost poles. Confusing....I flung the door open, shined the flashlight & low and behold, there was a raccoon INSIDE MY COOP!!!!

That raccoon has been dispatched.

But not before it killied one of my good laying hens. Red sex link.

Not sure if it got anymore. I'll do a headcount tonight. Ugh! I hate predators!

So sorry! Was going to ask if it just ended up being the one chicken, but I saw your later reply.
I've caught and dispatched 3 coons recently. One on Monday, 2 on Tuesday. But none in the traps on Wed or Thurs. Did they learn their lesson, when Fred, Bob, and Larry didn't return to the pack??

We set 2 of those dog-safe (and hopefully chicken safe) tube type traps. I must say, I was impressed!

Hopefully they will all calm back down soon.

I thought broody season was over, but had one of my choc orps join her sister, late in her sisters brood. So I gave her some eggs I had in the incubator. Gave her clears to start, but if she continues, I'll let her hatch come of the chicks. Good luck!
