With 8 chicks and 32 sq ft, if you can convert the whole thing into the coop once they're bigger and add an appropriate run, then that's a pretty good bargain.

Was thinking of maybe doing something like that but I also wont be keeping them locking away at night once they get older. But I have some time to think about what the next step is to add on to the coop. Plus the wood isn't all that expensive for when adding on becomes necessary.

If the concern about free ranging is predators but you have the space in your yard, look into electric poultry fence. It keeps chickens in and ground predators out and it's mobile and modular. To determine what breeds of chickens, you can post pictures in the appropriate forum on here and people will try to help you identify them.

I didn't know that they made electric fence for poultry I will have to look into the cost of it.

Northern Indiana

You should add the northern part to your profile.
So your going to be dealing with colder temps and possibly a lot of snow.
Unless your run will be predator and weather proof you're going to want more than the minimum 4sqft per bird in coop.
