Save the root great idea

Ok, so I've figured out my feed bill would be about 60% less, if I wasn't feeding every squirrel and rabbit for miles around. I free range in shifts, and some of my pens are left over from the previous owner, and I have tried all sorts of purchased, and DIY feeders, but no luck. The newest DIY invention will usually slow them down for a day or two, but that's it.

I'm too much of a closet tree hugger to poison, trapping would be cruel because it might be hours or a day (desert climate) before I was able to deal with caught critters, and it will be some time before I can re-build/replace some of the pens, but even then, I would have problems when the doors were open, so I think better to figure out a feeder...

Any bright ideas?

I've seen something like this before, but I couldn't quite tell how it was put together... This one's a bit easier to see. I have big fat Dorkings and Cream Legbars, so this might be perfect since I can set the mechanism a little on the heavy side to keep the rabbits out, that thanks to my all you can eat buffet are halfway to Harvey sized -lol.

I think I might even have all of the materials lying around, sans springs if needed...

Thanks 3forfree!
