DIY Thread - Let's see your "Inventions".

Here is our new brooder. We had old metal shelves with no bottoms. We used half inch barn siding for the tops and bottoms. The sides are made from wire mesh book shelves. The doors are made from pine trim pieces with chicken wire stapled to it. Cardboard boxes were cut down to be used as a tray to hold the wood pellets. Let me know what you think.

Looks pretty good...
....BUT....
Those lights are awfully close to the cardboard and bedding......I hope they are not real heat bulbs in there.

There's a safer, more natural way to provide a heat source to chicks. My newest chicks will be here this week, and this will make the 3 time I've used it. I'm going to post the link to that thread.....not only are there lots of photos, there also are videos of the system at work and lots of good modifications made by folks who love this way as much as I do. And all you need it is a bit of wire fencing folded into a hoop, a heating pad, and a towel. It would work perfectly in your setup.

Great idea thanks for posting it. Good diy version of broody plates with a few tweaks.

I use goldfish in my big water tanks to graze on any bug live and any algae that grow on the sides of the horse tank.

Algae is really not a bad character... shows the water is good. I started out with aquarium fish... About an Aeon ago...

. Its jsut a sign that there is organic material in the water to feed the Algae.

A quick scrub with a brush a rise and you are good to go. I dont even bother with my horse water tank... She rinses her mouth after drinking....

the alfalfa/grass particles are good for the gold fish.

I clean that tank about once a year... maybe twice.

The goat water always seemed to stay clean. they arent mouth rinsers and the water was always clear with a bit of algae growing on the sides to feed the gold fish.

I dont put fish in the chicken water... too small of a container. So a scrub with a toilet brush designated for the task... a dump and we are good to go.
