- Project #4 - Planter (unfinished) -
Yesterday, my sister found an old wood box stored in the garage. We'd been wanting to make a larger "grazing box" for an oregano plant. I was going to build my own box frame, but then decided to try using this wood box since it wasn't being used. I built a small frame from scrap wood to fit the top of the opening and stapled a small piece of hardware cloth to the inside. It took me a while, but eventually I found an old hinge to use and even an old handle. Hopefully this will work well for our oregano to grow and allow the chickens to eat it without destroying the plant! I'm excited to see how it goes.

I'm not certain the oregano will grow through the ¼ inch holes. I'm hoping it will. Otherwise, I'll find another plant with smaller leaves to grow through the holes.
That's a neat idea!
I really like your hardware cloth ideas, I kinda want to give it a shot.

I think your Oregano will grow through the gaps in the wire. Plants live to find ways to thrive. Lol
My Oregano bushes out pretty decent, but the stems and leaves are quite small.

Good to know! I have an oregano plant in the front yard that's maybe 2 years old.

And it seems like it could grow through good hopefully! I'm headed over to my grandparents house later today and my grandma has a huge oregano plant that I think she'll let me take some of it home. That way I won't have to wait forever for the seeds to grow and get established. 😁

Nice! Both of our are about the same age. Haha!

Yesss, very good idea. Not to mention they are incredibly hard to germinate the seed, at least for me. :p

The stuff you've posted looks more like 1/2"...or is my perception just off.
You know what...🤦🏼‍♀️
Yup.
You're right.
We have both and I mixed 'em up.🫣

I can get my oregano to germinate okay, but basil I'm rarely successful with.🥺😂

Are you burying them?
Not really🤷🏼‍♀️. I probably pushed them down a little bit, but not much. I'll be sure to not bury them at all in the future.👍🏼 Thanks😁
Basil is a light germinator and does best when seeds are exposed to light and not buried.
We're exactly opposite.
The trick with basil is to get a heat mat, and to saran wrap over the seed to hold in the moisture.
I think it was the seeds I was using. As soon as I switched to another packet I finally got some. I did just get a heat mat this year so I'll be sure to use that in the future with basil.😁
