Do bulls normally do this????

I could see him doing something like that to wean his calves. He just seems so sweet to all his animals and his cattle appear to absolutely adore him.

Makes me happy to live next to them because you see some really un-cared for looking animals in this part of Arkansas sometimes, it is nice to see happy ones.

Maybe they keep the cows closer to home then.

Or they may use a different type of weaning beside just taking the calves away.

We wean ours by putting the calves in a smaller area right next the pasture that the cows are in. That way there isn't all the separation anxiety and bawling. It works quite well for us. Then when we do take the calves away later to finish them out on grass at home, no one puts up a fuss.

Not to take this off- topic but we take the calves about three miles away from the cow herd when we wean. (To a corral right in back of the houses on the ranch.) The reason is because if we put them anywhere near each other, we have calves slipping through fences to be with mama or mamas tearing down the fence to get to their calf. You must have excellent fences if you pasture them next to each other.

Glad it works for you.

When we lived on the home place at the ranch we could hear the calves bawling in the corrals about 50 yards from the house but it only lasted about two or three days.

Sorry to continue this hi-jacking... I'll be quiet after this, I promise!

Buster, our fences are just simple electric (they respect the electric pretty well, though, thanks to a good fencer). I think part of what helps is that the area adjacent to the pasture where we put the calves is open at first so that just the calves can get in there. We put some free choice hay in there and the calves go in on their own, but can still go back out with mama. After they're used to the area, eventually we fence them in and they stay there without much fuss. Maybe we're just lucky!

It's the bull that is making that noise? HUMMMM, don't know about that. We bought our charlois (sp) bull calf from our neighbors across the street. His momma cried for him for days. They would bellow back and forth for about a week. We kept him put up in the pen until they calmed down, after all, we had just finished our fences. They now see each other everday. He has Chloe for his herdmate, our Jersey cow, and they get along real good. We we have him processed we will have to get another to replace him.

Yeah, I think he needed some nookie and the girls were in the other side of the field. All I know is he sure LOOKED like a bull.

I haven't heard a sound out of him all day and they are all out there.
