Do Cayuga's Go Broody??

My experience(Swedish) she made a nest (hidden) would lay an egg every day. Covered them every day till she got to around 12-13 then began to set. I kept them penned safe from predators.

I just found another egg in the run. Same duck?? Yesterday's egg?

I cracked it open and it did look fertile. I just have never seen them ''doing it''. I definitely will get a box for a nest out in the run. What kind of bedding should I use? I have both straw and hay. Or something else?

My drake is a Pekin or a white crested but with no crest. If one of his parents was crested, does that make him a non crested... crested or just a Pekin? I have been wondering that. The Cayuga just started to let him mate her. They definately are not shy about it either. She used to fight him, now I guess she is in heat. I am hoping to get some more Cayuga's out of her. She is the sweetest bird..

Do they mate in water only? On the ground like chickens or both?
I do have a kiddie pool that they swim in.
Sounds like you may get some surprises Chickie Mamma, if they hatch!

The can mate either way. I dont keep water in for mine just because of the extreme mess they make, got too many turkeys, pheasants, peacocks and rare bantams around for all that.
Anyway, they havent produced a dud yet.
As for what to look for, it shouldnt be a faint ring, should a a bold white ring around the dot, but Yall know the safest way to check is to put them in a incubator and candle them any time after the 4th day, Right? LOL, it's gone make you mad when you finally get that good one and see it cracked on the ground

!
Anyway, hope they get going for you, ours started back in Feb. and are done looks like for the year.
I too would use the straw for bedding , by the way, it holds together better and gets less moldy over time..

Oh, and my cayugas, like the muddiest hole in the pens too! LOL

See ya

I have both of my two adults and they are broody too. I destroyed one of the nests quick enough that one isn’t currently sitting now.

I have a Cayuga hen that started laying eggs 8/9/24. She was a few days old on 3/31/24 when I bought her. She laid an egg a day until 3 days ago (it's 8-14-24). I removed her egg every day so not nest of eggs to bring on broodiness. Despite this she has gone broody. I've given her my Khaki Campbell hen eggs after she started acting strange, quacking a lot, picking up straw and throwing it on her back, not leaving her nest. She prefers a milk crate I set on its side & placed on top of another milk crate. Covered it with burlap and put an edge to keep bedding and eggs in the crate. She was highly distressed when I had to leave them out of the pen for a while so I put her nest outside the coop in a fenced-in protected area and she went in it with no hesitation. Sounds like she is the exception for this breed.
