The can mate either way. I dont keep water in for mine just because of the extreme mess they make, got too many turkeys, pheasants, peacocks and rare bantams around for all that.
Anyway, they havent produced a dud yet.
As for what to look for, it shouldnt be a faint ring, should a a bold white ring around the dot, but Yall know the safest way to check is to put them in a incubator and candle them any time after the 4th day, Right? LOL, it's gone make you mad when you finally get that good one and see it cracked on the ground
!
Anyway, hope they get going for you, ours started back in Feb. and are done looks like for the year.
I too would use the straw for bedding , by the way, it holds together better and gets less moldy over time..
Oh, and my cayugas, like the muddiest hole in the pens too! LOL
