I have 4 three week old chicks, 3 Silkies and 1 BO, I have seen them do a very strange thing while they free ranged on the lawn. They sat down, turned to lay on one side, then proceeded to stretch out one of their wings. They stayed like this for a while and it looked like they were napping.

The first time I saw them do like this I thought they were dead...:/ I went to investigate and they popped back up... :jumpy

Just wondering if it is normal for chickens to sun bathe.

It's perfectly normal

My chickens do it all the time. I've seen chicks do that under the heat lamp as well. They are just enjoying the warmth.

I understand the Appearing To Be Dead:

I sometimes wonder if this is evolutionary behavior geared toward survival. What critter is going to attack this dead-looking bird!

So if a chicken did this Appearing-To-Be-Dead in front of an opossum, who invented playing dead, would the possum recognize it for the charade it was?
