If your starting in the spring with adult ducks they will not need a heat source, they have down coats on.

Juliezoo, out of curiosity, what area are you in? I'm asking mostly out of curiosity, but also I may be able to offer a bit of insight on raising ducks in the Northern KY area... My youngest set is 4 weeks old, they have been living outside full time for 2.5 weeks with no heat and ranging with the adults full time for 3 weeks (I've been lucky that my drake has accepted them as a part of the flock, but I do not allow them to sleep together at night just yet).
