Do eggs need to be refrigerated or not?

My mother bought our eggs from the "egg man" who used to come to the house once a week with fresh eggs. She kept them in a ceramic chicken on the kitchen counter. Nobody ever got sick. I would love to find a ceramic chicken like mum used to have but I haven't seen once here in the US.

My family and my husband are from the UK. They do not refrigerate their eggs in teh store there. They are sold on the shelves, non-cold.

I have always kept mine on the counter... only in the summer do I keep them in the cooler refrigerator cos of the heat, but that in only for a bout a month or two when it gets overly warm for me.

I date them all and put them in a basket, and use oldest first. They stay good for a long time....at least a few weeks. Never had an issue!

Everybody is right!

Everyone here seems to have their own unique way of storing their eggs, and they all obviously work. The egg seems to be such a perfect work of engineering that despite all the well-meaning things we do to them they still end up being nutritious and delicious.

I would also like to add that in many other countries eggs are never refrigerated in the markets. I refrigerate mine anyway out of habit.

Goodie!! Thanks cheerfulheart.

Funnily enough the first ceraminc chicken on the page is exactly the same as the one my mum had! Now I have to find one in the US.

I refrigerate, but only because I have a nice egg holder built into my fridge door and I can't stand counter clutter.

I hid a cartonful in the bottom drawer. I think it'll take longer than a week though.

We boiled some fresh ones last week and although the insides made for the prettiest boiled eggs I've ever seen, you tore the outsides all to pieces peeling them.
