Do hens cluck even if they are not laying an egg?

One of my girls just laid her first eggs this week, and now everyday non stop in the mornings she and the other hen are clucking loudly. I have been told that they cluck because they have laid or are about to lay, but I look after the clucking and NO egg yet. However, it IS after a loud cluck that I do find an egg when I do find one. So, do they cluck just to cluck also?

Yes, mine do. I almost always bring treats with me when I go to them and so when they see me coming they become all talkative.

Mine also cluck even if they haven't or aren't about to lay an egg. I love listening to them ... maybe they are just talking about the "possibility" of "maybe" laying an egg "sometime"!

They are of the FEMALE gender therefore, they will TALK whenever there is anyone around to hear it, whether they did something(lay an egg) or not, I think it is a gender based defect, but who knows.

Ok thank you. It really sounds more like an obnoxious (but adorable) squalk...its no casual cluck. This is still common when not laying?

Mine have different sounds for different situations.
e.g.
-Someone's not with us!
-I want that worm!
-Get away from my food!
-You're my best friend! (That's from my mutts, who purr at each other.)
etc.

Mine squawk if:

I'm taking too long opening the gate.
The treats I brought are not their favorites.
They approve or disapprove of my cleaning or changes to their coop or run.

Actually, the only time my BR is quiet, is when she's laying an egg.

Sometimes one of my Leghorns will cluck while someone else is laying an egg, and the one in the nest is usually quiet. Not sure if the one outside is waiting for her turn, or announcing for her sister, or maybe they do both.
I've seen 2 of them in the nest at the same time, so I guess the one outside talking isn't desperate to lay yet.

Mine don't talk much else, unless they are getting treats, and then it's more like a low mumble with their beaks full
