Do they look exactly like the ones in xfiles photo? Solid stripe on top with the eye, and the start of a stripe lower down comming from the corner of the bill. A small yellow spot on either side just above the tail?

yes accept mine's spots aren't as big as in xfiles photo.

I have a question does a grown Rouen look exactly like a mallard.
My son has three they are very large but of course i have no idea how big they should be.
They have their immature brown feathering now so we don't know the sex.
How can i tell which they are?? Rouen/ mallard?
We were told we had to clip their feathers so they can't fly away?

(they came from tractor supply)

Also my Cayuga's are just getting their green feathering comeing in.
Well theres this one "fatty" that will pull out the others feathers.

Is this normal?

I mean nobody's bare or anything he will just reach over and pull out a feather or two.

Some ducks are such bullies...The love to pluck feathers,With my 6 babies I have one who is always messing with another..Bite at the butt or feet everytime they try to sleep!!

W.CharltonChickens :

When Mallards start feathering out do they go through an immature phase first? Or, do they feather out to male/female right away?

The drakes don't get their colors or tail feathers until they are at least 4 months old. If you pick them up, you can judge by the sound. By 8 weeks at most, a female will make a loud 'whacking' sound, a male will still be peeping.

Another way I have noticed with mine is that the males (rouens) will get a white bar across the front of their necks when they start getting their feathers, the females don't get these.

Hummm....no white bar on Bungie yet. Bungi does have that cool blue racing stripe on the wing feathers. It is so pretty in the sun.

Rouens do look like mallards, but their feather color is deeper.
