Do I help my eggs? Day 22.

Once you can see what is going on in there, since the blood vessel is still visible, check to see if it has absorbed the yolk completely- but only if you can see it's belly area without disturbing it! Sometimes baby chicks get excited and pip and end up stopping because of the blood vessels and because they're not done absorbing everything. I just had a chick that was in this very situation on Monday. She pipped and got enough of the egg off that I could see there was a blood vessel still going strong. She wasn't done absorbing it or her yolk so I had to monitor for several hours and make sure her membrane stayed moist.
It's very tiring for both chick and the person anxiously waiting nearby!

So I peel the membrane as much as I can so long as I don't hit blood? Also chip the shell away on the air cell area?

What is the dental floss for? Just so that I know how to use it in case.

The vessels look wrapped ontop of the chick. But haven't shown any signs of receding.

Thanks all.

Just helped my chick.
Luckily it appears that her yolk sac has been absorbed and her veins are for the most part receded!!
Her foot was sort of stuck and I was able to free it.

She has a little blood I could see around her navel area. And it looks like she may have veins still on one piece of membrane that is attached to her navel.

See that piece of membrane with veins (near her head like) that membrane is attached to a thin piece that goes to her belly area.

She is now resting in the egg carton. Still has the bottom of the egg on her.
I had her on the bator floor but she looked to be gasping a bit. So I propped her up in the carton and she seems to be breathing better.

She has her eye open, but right now she is sleeping.
She was chirping to me when I assisted her. Chirps every once in a while in the bator too.

Any advice? Should I remove her from the egg completely once those veins stop bleeding? They really don't seem to be bleeding bad, but I know when you see blood you're suppose to stop.

I think I'd be tempted to just leave her in her egg shell cup for a while. She may perk up and struggle out on her own, which would be the best case scenario. But... I haven't dealt with an assisted hatch in about 40+ years!

I would also leave her and let her come out when she is ready to. Right now, she is just tuckered out! Don't worry too much about the umbilical cord vein. Somehow, the chick knows what to do with it. I've had some that will drag themselves out of the egg and they have that "string" attached for a day or two, when it dries up and falls off on it's own.

I am going to add something... My second egg pipped at around 9:45 this morning, and she has only made a crack that can flap open, but there is no hole... She chirps A LOT, and I'm wondering if that means something! Her pip is in the air cell which is good... This is my first hatch but second egg... Is she still ok? My first one went a little quicker than this...
Thank you

It can take 24 hrs from pip to zip and since you don't have a full pip yet you've a long ways to go. I doubt it will be out before tomorrow. Keep us posted.

I would give her 24 hours from pip before worrying. A lot of times, they get tired and have to rest. I have had a few that would pip and not do anything else for about 24 hours. After 24 hours, if she hasn't made any progress then you could make her pip hole a little bigger. It could be that she is waiting for veins to recede as well.
