I know this may sound like a strange question, but my Cayuga hen laid her first egg today. I know I have to wash the eggs off, but am I supposed to wash the black pigment off before eating them?

Thanks!!

Yes wash your eggs before eating them..ALL eggs ..
You don't have to scrub them .

I know I have to wash them, I just wanted to know if I should rub all the black stuff off too.

Yes, because she is a Cayuga her eggs are naturally black.

They are pretty cool looking. I did wash away the poo/dirt. But I noticed when I was rubbing the poop/dirt away the black rubbed away as well. So I was just curios if I should try rubbing away the rest of it.

Nah. The color is not toxic.

Her eggs will lighten gradually, too, until they are almost white. When she goes off laying and then starts again in the spring (or whenever), the eggs will be dark again. And then gradually lighten.

The outer (black at first, gray later) coloring of a cayuga egg is different from the chicken egg pigment. It is only a thin layer and will easily rub off but there is no need to remove it. Enjoy!

Thanks. I figured it would be ok, but I'm new to ducks so I just wanted to make sure.
