do quail in egg peep?

Supposedly, though I never hear chicks peep in the egg unless I have it up to my ear.

Quail usually hatch pretty fast though, if you look in there and see an egg that looks zipped, chances are it's already hatched

ETA: Quail don't really 'peep'. It's more of a 'coo' or a squeeking sound (think guinea keet) than a peep.

I just seperated my males this week cause they started crowing...they are 5 weeks old.

I've got a pen that has nothing but males in it, they are about 4 months old. Then I have another pen that has probably equal numbers male and female, they are about 3 months old.

Normally I would aout 8 weeks or so, unless they start laying/crowing before that, but these guys are taking the effects of the weather to heart, and not doing a thing. In the spring (if I still have them) I'll have to seperate them.

OH, and from what I understand, you can keep a Bachelor Pad like Shelley does with little problems indefinately. I seperated my males because I do have a few females in with them and that will make them fight.

I had a few quail that had pipped but not zipped that were making noise from inside the egg- but after 8-12 hours they still had not zipped. I helped them out of the egg (even though I knew better...) and the ones I helped out died within 1-2 days. It was like they were stuck and unable to spin around to zip- even though the humidity was really high (85%) So the healthy ones don't really have time to hang out in there and make noise cause they want OUT!

It was my first experience with hatching, so even though I knew that I shouldn't help them out of the eggs- it was like they were calling out for help! poor little buggers
