Do we need a router to cut out windows?

It makes me nervous to see plunge cuts with circular saws being suggested to those not-so-experienced with tools and tool safety.

Just as good a result, in not much more time, can be achieved by drilling good-sized holes in each of the 4 corners, then 'connecting the dots' with a power jigsaw (or sawzall=reciprocating saw, if you don't mind a somewhat hairier result). You can borrow or rent a power jigsaw if you haven't got one.

Good luck, have fun, try to keep all fingers/hands/feet/eyes attached and in original condition,

Pat

ONLY if you're experienced with a circular saw and plunge cuts at 180 degrees, above your head level.

I would use a router if you had to have the cleanest of cuts. For my coop (in progress) I used a sawsall but also plan on putting trim around the windows to hide the ragged cut line. Mark your lines and take your time. I'd also suggest a face shield to keep dust and chips from your eyes/face. It's hard to concentrate on staying on the line when you have sawdust in your eyes.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll do great with whatever option you try.

THANK YOU ALL for your wonderful help!!!

We decided to exchange the windows we have for slightly smaller ones that will fit between the 2x4's
and use all of your suggestions for drilling the pilot holes and cutting the edge with the saws we have.

. . . Hubby still wants a router, though . . .

X2... It was a breeze, and we used 1x4 for the dges to neatin it up, and stop drafts. Really easy to do. Plan "B" would be the jig saw for me. But The sawsall is the ticket. For me anyway.
