)But I totally understand raising chickens and eating them. I feel that it is important to know what is in the food we eat and where it comes from. Who knows where store bought chicken comes from, I heard that the US may start getting chicken from China.

We eat storebought-- but as yet not our own...
we DO plan to raise meat birds next year once we get the hang of raising the eggers....
But will NOT do the processing ourselves---they'll leave in a crate and come back frozen in ziplock bags! Thos Chicks will be raised separately from our permanant flock,and without as much interaction so no one get's too attached.

THEN we'll see--- daughter has allready gone vegetarion on 2 occasions due to the ethics and emotions of killing animals for food--- but both times was "done in" by a chicken nugget!!!
LOL!! (That was before we raised any ourselves--- so who knows?)

There are your 'special friends' and that's fine. They are keepers. Then there is the 'who's for dinner crowd', and that's good too. It's good to know that they were happy and well cared for and were not abused. I'd rather eat my own than store.

I have a chicken breast defrosting right now. Not one of my birds, a store bought one.

I couldn't eat one of my pets, but I totally understand raising your own and eating them. I don't have land for raising my own, but I've been thinking about this, and I think I could do it if I had to.

I do think about how the animal lived before I eat it, and sometimes that messes me up, but I'm used to eating meat from the store, so I give thanks and eat it.

This makes me appreciate my chickens even more.

i quit eating meat of all kinds when after working on a commercial farm a long time ago. i have been a vegetarian for decades now. after dosing genetically engineered chickens with all kinds of drugs and the same with pigs and cattle, i just can't eat commercially grown meat. i did continue to eat deer for a while but my time to go hunting is limited so i just eventually stopped eating meat all together.

i own a farm, when i retire and move back i intend to start raising my own meat and eating it again. i am just not going to eat the genetically altered, steroid injected, hormone and antibiotically enhanced crap that they sell at the grocery store. oh yeah, all commercially raised beef is treated with radioactive isotopes at the slaughter house. most of our vegetables come out of organic gardens that are either grown by my father or friends. i have been freezing and canning all summer. i don't trust much of the commercial food supply.

I personally detest the factory farming methods and hate all the chemical and junk we put into the meat we eat. So i actually try not to eat much meat but I do eat it.

I really respect someone ability to raise their own food becuae I think having birds humanely raised is so much better, but if I had to kill an animal to feed myself I would starve to death. So while i cant eat anything I own I dont look down on anyone who raises their food.

I am one of those people who has taken in chickens off the trucks. I generally euthanize them right away becuase their injuries are severe. The reason I do it is becuase i just want to eliviate their suffering.

After the last chicken i got from the truck I couldnt eat meat for a while. Mainly becuase it was packed with feces in wounds on its leg and keel. It also stunk like nothing i had ever smelled before and every inch of its skin and meat with permeated with rotting flesh and feces. I showed this to my husband and said, we are eating this? It was nasty.
