Do you eat the ones you love?

Raising chickens and being a part of this site, has not made me want to become a vegetarian or a vegan. As a matter of fact, it has done the exact opposite. LOL. I find me wanting to keep and raise a larger quantity and a larger variety of animals to eat. Now, since I've been a member of this site, I've wanted to keep rabbits, lamb, goat, cow, sheep, geese, duck, and pheasants just for eating purposes.

I have expanded to keeping quail and turkeys, and yes we plan to eat those. LOL. So, no, being a part of BYC and raising my own animals has NOT curbed my appetite for meat, but rather expanded it and made me want more ethical raised varieties of meat.. I know, I am weird..

I will however add, that being a part of BYC has made me much more educated on the topics of meat and animal raising. So now when I walk down the aisle at the grocery store, I really reconsider any meat that's shelved. Or when your mother-in-law buys the liquid eggs..

Same thing here. I'm buying my own broilers to raise even if it costs more than store bought bird I know what my birds have come from, what they are eating and are healthier themselves and healthier for me to eat.

All my critters are pets, I'm too much of a softy. I keep a bunch of roos together that I saved, if I had more property i'd prob have even more. Hens are #1 manure spreaders and then egg layers(i don't eat a lot of eggs unless it's in something) but my friends enjoy them. I understand the people who do treat them as livestock, and have no hard feelings, just is my personal choice. I have silkies to make me laugh at life, peacocks, ornamentl pheasants, pigeons, gamebirds and colorful chicks to paint my backyard with beautiful colors, and eat bugs and things. I have turkeys because I enjoy their sillyness and their need to be with me and their gobbles make me giggle. I have emus because it is amazing that something that gets so big can be so gental, funny and always brings a smile to my face and warms my heart. I do eat meat, just not my own animals, everyone who knows me can tell you if it steps foot on my property it's here until it dies.

I think of the chickens as dogs or cats I wouldn't dare eat one. I just recently had to put one out of her misery because of a broken hip and I couldn't see her limping around anymore. I just had the neighbor shoot her. I wish I could be vegetarian my dad thinks its unhealthy and because Im 15 and not out of the house yet I cannot. Even if I did have extra roosters I would keep them, just in a separate cage. I don't see why you would eat a rooster, their gorgeous. Right now I only have a hen and 2 roosters, all in one cage and fine.

Ducks are even worse to eat. We had one duck for 8 or 9 years. He followed us around, plays with the dog, I even walked him on a leash. [Our chickens ride on the handlebars of our bikes.] LOL you should see the double takes people give you when they realize you have a chicken on your handlebars. :]
