Do you ever encounter people that don't know where eggs come from?

Portagegirl.....

Right after we got our chicks, I made chicken for dinner. And my 6 year old asked what we were eating.

Me: It's chicken.
Him: Like our chicks.
Me: Yes.
Him:

He ate it just the same. He frequently asks me about the meat we have for dinner and I've always related it to the animal it comes from. It doesn't seem to bother him, but he's definitely curious about it. My father raises cows, so he's familiar with what happens to them.

I do agree that we (as people) are too disconnected from our food source. There would be a lot less wasting food and more respect if people had to kill their own food. (We haven't done it yet, but DH and I have considered doing meat birds)

My 3-year-old seems to be catching on...although he still FREAKS out if we walk by the fish at Whole Foods. Full meltdown.

"WE NO EAT FISH!!! FISH IS FOR SWIMMING! FISHES GO IN THE FISH TANK!!!!!"

*sigh*We'll get there.

The wife of a friend of ours was given a dozen fresh farm eggs. She held them up to her husband and said" Aren't they cute!! What do I do with them?" My husband about burst a vessel trying not to laugh at her. He said"Eat them" She thought fresh eggs would most likely be full of salmonella. SHE THREW THEM OUT!!!!! Maybe she should stick with her irradiated ultra pasturized dead eggs, huh.

Since people found out that I started raising chickens this year for the first time I am contunually asked if I needed a rooster to produce eggs. I've got a good one. One time while visting my grandparents farm grandma told me and my step brother [2 months apart in age] to go gather the eggs for her. We were around 8 yrs old. We asked my dad about the brown eggs. He told us they were rooster eggs and they weren't any good. So being the nasty little boys that we were we broke all the brown eggs, not only did we break them but we threw at hens. We got chewed out good and so did my dad. Bad naughty Dad!

I don't think eggs are either pasteurized or irradiated. How would you pasteurize a whole egg in the shell anyway? I think eggs that are sold bulk by the gallon for commercial use are pasteurized. As for irradiation, it is not a bad thing. It is too bad it is not used more often in the meat industry. Salmonella and e coli contamination occur on the outside of the carcass. If carcasses were irradiated going down the line it would just about eliminate the e coli recalls. One reason it is not done is that people do not understand the difference between radiation and irradiation and would think they would be eating radioactive meat. In other words it is a public relations nightmare.

My brother has a friend that works in a large egg factory nearby. I am getting him to set up an appointment for me to tour the facility so I can find out firsthand what is and what is not done to eggs. That way when I open my mouth I will know for sure what I am talking about.

I do like my home grown eggs, but the eggs that are in the store are not necessarily stale. After all, several BYC members have even gotten them to hatch.

I haven't had the pleasure of running into anyone with a phobia against home grown eggs. If I do, I am going to ask them exactly why they think whatever it is they think. Like how they think store bought eggs get there and how they are handled from chicken to market, and on what they are basing their opinion. I would really like to know.

As for the nurses on a previous post who think fertile eggs are unhealthful, I would like to ask them to explain to me why, if that were the case, fertile eggs are often available in health food stores and cost more than the infertile ones.

I used to work at a fast food restaurant and we received eggs in two forms: real, regular white-shelled eggs and liquid eggs. The liquid eggs were pasteurized and according to health dept., they could be slightly runny upon customer request. The regular eggs had to be cooked through since they were not pasteurized or irradiated. We used to get the eggs in cases of 360.

I got so used to fast food that one day off I made myself an egg sandwich w/ eggs from the ranch I worked at part time on real bread instead of a too hard muffin with real milk cheese (not oil based like the fast food restaurant) with real butter instead of margarine ... Oooohhhh, what a difference!

That reminds me of the time my teen-aged neice was behind a cotton truck, and commented:

"Oh my gosh, how many sheep did they have to kill to get all that wool?"

The nurses that I work with had somehow received the misinformation that fertilized eggs have more cholesterol. I am also a nurse & explained to them that they were incorrect. The two of them ganged up on me about the disgustingness of rooster sperm, possibility of developing embryos, & the high cholesterol of farm-fresh eggs.
I let them know that: 1. the average person can't tell the difference between a fertile/nonfertile egg either visually or by taste, 2. that if eggs are collected daily and not allowed to be set upon by the hen, they will never begin to develop, and 3. that although farm fresh (read: free-range) eggs may have more flavor, they do not have more cholesterol.
The two ladies involed in the debate assured me that they heard from reputable sources (probably the internet or heresay) the "truth" and that I should learn the facts before I tried to sell eggs to unsuspecting people.
Oh... and there isn't a health food store that sells fertile eggs for probably about an hour drive in any direction. They wouldn't pay more for fertile eggs, so they wouldn't believe anyone else would, either.

1. My friends and co-workers are blown away that I have chickens. Like it's some far out thing.

2. Speaking of cholesterol. No one would take my EE blue eggs until one day someone heard from somebody that those blue eggs are special. It seems as though they are low cholesterol you see.

Since then they are in high demand. Yes I did try to correct them but I'm certain it was to no avail because they are still in high demand.
