If the end of the world as we know it came and the financial structure fell apart and people where left to make it or perish - guess who would make it? People would come looking for us to learn what we know.
Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :
Now, if I could just trade eggs/chicken for fresh garden veggies, and get a cow for milk, I'd be set!
Think goat not cow. Seriously.
2 does and you'll have gallon or more milk a day. Plenty to drink, culture for creams, yogurts, buttermilk, you name it - even making your own soft and hard cheeses.
They eat less, can forage in seasons with brush to eat, keep over grown places eaten down, are affectionate, playful and entertaining. They require less feild space for growing out. You can use any bucklings you don't want for meat. Chevron is very good I am told. (We haven't butchered any goats yet.)
They also can be taught to pull carts and wagons - talk about entertainment for little boys learning to handle a goat team. I am hoping for a matched pair to grow out for wethers from my next kiddings just for that purpose. My husband and FIL woodwork and we have talked about a buckboard for a while now. lol
Rethink the cow and get the goats. Saanana, Nubians, Alpines, Toggs or any combination of crosses from those. I don't like pygmy and mini goats LOL although those would work for you. My does are saanan/nubian crosses and they give a gallon of milk each every day and every night. I even use it to make goat milk soap.
Pssstt - did I tell you?? - get a couple goats and forget the cow.
Yup.
When PBS was running Pioneer House.. or whatever it was I was thinking "Not a problem. what is wrong with these people" Or Cowboy U on CMT.. again not a problem.
Although I have to admit I LOVE the clothing style of 1953/54
Not the attitudes of the day, but the clothes.
I went to an Aggie school, back before they had computers in every classroom doing the thinking for the students. I can still and will still "work" the land. As an older friend of mine, also a Aggie graduate, told me a few years ago "it will be us that the country looks to to feed em and save em when it all falls apart."
For a long time I wanted a milk cow, then after reading your posts Missprissy, I mentioned to my husband about a milk goat. He said that goat milk tastes terrible and is nothing like cow milk. I've never had goat milk so I dont know. Is it different tasting then cow milk??
When properly handled and cooled you can't taste a difference in goat milk or cow milk. Good cold milk tastes like good cold milk.
The problem alot of people have is not properly cleaning the equipment they use to handle the milk.
Warm water makes milk proteins stick to whatever container it is you are using and washing. You need to use properly cleaning agents and stainless steel or glass to handle the milk.
The milk needs to come from the goat and straight to cooling. not sit out by the barn while you finish up chores.
When I milk I use frozen 20 oz drink bottles in my milking bucket to begin instantly cooling down the milk.
Improper pasturing (heating) of the milk will make it taste off.
If you let goats feast on while onions or garlic you'll get some bitter milk as well. Feed the goats properly, handle the milk and clean the utensils and equipment properly and you'll never know the difference.
And here I thought I was the only on who thought this!! People around here think I'm a complete nut-job, but I'm with Rachel. We need to get back to our roots. I even blogged about how people like us, should some drastic apocolypse happen, that we would be the only ones able to survive off the land.
I should have been born in any time but this one, lol. I love the pirate idea!! Yeah, its been romanticized alot with the movies, but I still love it. The pioneers, the Victorian era, all of it. The Wild West, the moonshine runners in the early 20's, boy howdy am I there!
We live in a disposable world. Nothing anymore it seems is made to last, to be passed down to future generations. I know that the DH and I bought furniture with the intention of passing it down. Because of that, we spent the money and took the time to find good stuff.
Point being, this is a great thread, and its good to know that we all 'get it' as was said by the original poster!! Thanx for starting this!!
I agree with you Miss Prissy about handling and caring of goats...had a couple of Nubians and boy they are something but would never have them again. Great 4H project!
I dont have a wish to be in the times of the past maybe just sampling here and there whatever fancy suits me. I enjoy the Victorian times and Civil War eras.
My hubby wished he was in the Highlands of Scotland, probably back in the Jacobite rebellion times....he dreams about one day that he would take himself like Rob Roy and get lost in the mountains with his sheep. Living in the Highlands gotta be rough and not much to make a living today, cant not grow crops but sheep or hardy animals like Highland cattle.
If he would have the full great kilt, make himself a little more rogue, and rugged looking, let his curly hair grow out...you can imagine the rest!

That's me... early 1700s Scotland... I'm fascinated with that time/place, and have always felt like I lived then and want to go back. *sigh* I'm sure it was rough back then, but you always went to bed tired from good honest labor, not cranky from dealing with other people from a desk with a phone stuck in your ear.
