Do you ever get used to the flapping of the wings?

I used a syringe to put the bourbon down the turkeys. Open their mouth and squirt it down. My turkeys liked it. There heads turned bright red. I did 3 shots for one turkey. You could tell right away that it hit him, but I waited a hour for full effect.

Thats how I want to go. On line Martha Stewart was given lots of bad comments for saying she gets her turkeys drunk first. I think its a great idea. I think the meat will be more tender then if they get stressed.

The reason we shot this turkey is because he wasn't the most trusting thing, and being handled at all was stressful for him. That's why we opted not to use a killing cone or anything, but to just let him out in the yard and shoot him from over the fence. No stress for him in being handled, over before he knew what happened.

I'm thinking maybe closing my eyes, or just not being present, could be the way to go. Though getting them drunk isn't a bad idea either

Once they have no head I can reason with myself and say "It's just nerves.. look! It has NO HEAD!" The flapping really never bothered me. After about 3 of 16 I didn't even notice it too much.

We just did our first turkey, a BBB, last night. We let him get too big and there was no way was gonna fit in a cone. We used an old T-shirt and that worked pretty well.

It does get easier after awhile. The first was the hardest and it didn't help that he flapped himself off the pole that the killing cone (aka bleach bottle) was nailed too!! We fixed that after the first one!!

I've done this it works great. I now have a cone, but really the hose held them best and kept them from flapping. Put birds head down one leg to the toe, open toe just enough to pull head through, tie off hose around the legs, hang bird upside down for processing.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but can someone advise......................

I recently got a rubber traffic cone which I intend using as a killing cone, but I am at a loss as to what size I should make it. I did cut it before I processed the last bird, but while it easily fitted inside the cone, it's neck wasn't long enough for his head to protrude out the bottom. I have now cut another piece off but I'm hesitant to trim it too much in case I do it all wrong and the smaller roos fall all the way through. From what I gather, you get two sizes on cone as far as length is concerned. I have the shorter of the two.

Any help appreciated
