Do you feel guilty eating your fertilized eggs?

Yes, I do wonder what they'd look like and I've been on the look out for someone who's interested in hatching some and keeping them. I have no room for anymore.

being purebred gives an animal a tiny fraction of a better chance at life

I see it as completely the opposite. Nobody uses mutts for a puppy mill.

I have 3 mutt cats and they are spoiled rotten...and they are all fixed.

Huh???

Is hatching out every egg, going to extend you further then you can afford?
And is it going to produce and excessive amount chickens that you will have to sell or rehome because of space and financial issues?

Making careful selection as to what you need for chicks, chickens and eggs.

I hear ya. Yes, it would definitely be overwhelming to hatch more chicks than I could take care of. I'm hatching a few now, 5 to be exact. So nothing in excess here.

I only have 11 silkies now, hatching 5 due next week. I have an 8'x8' coop. I would still have room for a few more later this spring.

Know what you mean. I have silkies hens that are becoming really popular colors like porcelain, lavender, blue. I see them laying eggs. After gathering eggs, refrigerating, and eating them, I feel guilty.

Guess I should answer the original question

This is my first summer with chickens, so I'm not sure yet. I can't eat guinea eggs though. Nope...freaks me out. lol Fertile or not, my gooney birds eggs are not for my plate. No way. (I feed em to the kids! They don't know the difference.)

Its just my opinion, and largely based on mutt and cross breed horses. I’m all for do what you want with your own property and such, I personally can not justify or condone careless and frivolous breeding. It hurts to see so many decent horses go to slaughter because of careless breeding and the want of something cute. Tiny babies turns into great big horses quick. The way the horse market is right now unregistered animals have to be super high quality well trained animals or else they sell for virtually nothing. Meat buyers are getting tons of animals off places like craigs list and profiting off it greatly. High quality purebreds are selling for thousands less then what they are worth. Grade horses are selling for under 500 dollars.

Also imo it takes more then just being registered to warrant breeding an animal, temperament is huge for me, conformation, quality and proven performance are other big factors. In other words it has to be a pretty spectacular animal that could improve the quality of further generations to be worth breeding imo.

I feel a bit sorry for the really pretty eggs I get the next day or two after I just set a batch in the bator. Those that the just missed the chance at becoming chicks. Then I get over it because usually we get low on eating eggs while I'm saving up for the bator.
