... when you open the nesting box to check for eggs and there is a little fluffy butt girl in there trying to do her "business"?

On another note, I have gotten 5 eggs from my 23 girls so far - started on Saturday with 2, Sunday was only 1, Monday - 2, and here we are Tuesday morning and I have already walked in on a poor girl and embarrassed her...

Yes. Before I finished our coop and moved the big girls into it, they lived in a 4x4x4 box basically. To check for eggs, I had to bend over and stick my hand into the recycle bin in the dark. Once I reached in, felt around and grabbed - oops - accidentally had grabbed my white Cochin Blondie's head. She never made a squawk. No more egging without looking!

Now when I walk into the coop, I am more embarrassed than the girls. Why I have no idea except that I feel like I am interrupting something private.

I know that feeling.

It's a very special, private moment for them while they're delivering their precious gift of an egg. Being new at this, I also feel I'm stealing it when I take it from the nest. I guess after a couple of dozen or so it will just become routine.

My light brahma likes to sit on her eggs for a couple hours after she lays it. Sometimes I go up and think, you've been in there long enough. So I lift up the lid and rifle my hand under her, sorting through the fake eggs and the real one. She doesn't make a sound while I'm doing this. When I'm done I give her a couple pets, close the lid, and walk away with my loot.

i dont get embarrassed about it at all ill catch them if i find them in the right position lol. i have a few that will not lay if im in the coop they will hold the bugger till i leave which ive sat in there for 3 and a half hours before. clairese she has layed in front of me once or twice but she doesnt like you looking at her eyes or head you can glance but not a stare or she will start screeching and yelling. i dont feel bad about taking their eggs at all either i look at the big picture i feed them the least they can do for me is feed me.
