Those aren't worms at the top, that's damp shredded paper..

I'd head of people keeping worm bins in their closets.. So long as the bin is healthy, it just smells like wet dirt.

Those double-pallet composting bins make me drool, not vomit.

I used to have a double bin, but neighbors parked a white moho behind there and I had to grow vines and shrubs to hide it.

My coop is in the background, and you can just barely see the new compost pile with the pitchfork sticking up in the foreground of the picture. I put the manure into the compost pile each day and turn it over for fast composting for the veggie garden, also visible, in part, in the photo. The pond is where the photo has been taken from, and pond water and sludge can go into the compost pile as well.

Those worm bes are just full of wet paper right? I've got lots of paper that has been shreaded and I've been wondering what to do with it. Did you just put worms from your garden in it or did you buy a thing of like fishing bait?

I also have an open pile in the pasture. It is about 6ft in diameter and about 3 ft tall. Periodically I turn it over to mix the new matter in with the old . This helps to speed the process a bit. I add water when I think of it to help it break down.

In the past I have used the two bin method like the pallet design shown in an earlier post. It works well because you can turn over the content from one side into the other to aid in mixing.

There really isn't a wrong way. Nature takes care it. I don't add meat scraps because of the smell and it will attract critters. egg shells, and any veggie matter is fair game.

Hi! Could you give me a little more detail on how you did the bottom and "flap"? I've got 2 of these things out back that I want to make into composters too. I'm gonna be rich from selling composted chicken poo!!

PS do you turn the pile or do you just let it set?

I used to have a worm bin in my basement too, until I moved and now I have no basement.

They really don't smell like people think they would. As long as you put in there the same thing you would put in a regular composter. No meats, oils, breads, etc.... In the book, "Worms Eat My Garbage" they even talk about how people have worm bin are actually used as furniture in some appartments and people don't even know it.
