Do you hide food from your family?

And NEVER buy treats?

I think that what most of us are talking about is treats, not snacks in general. At our house, granola bars, apples, bananas etc are all available for snacks, but the treats such as ice cream, chocolates etc are often above temptation for some people/kids. Those are what some of us are hiding.

And if they are hidden, no one is being taught anything cause they are hidden and my kids dont know that they are hidden. Therefore... I'm not teaching them to hide anything.

I don't hide things, but find it exceedingly aggravating to buy things for lunches only to have, like a great many of you, a DH that doesn't know the meaning of portion control snarf down the last bit of X,Y or Z. He got mad at me when I got mad at him for eating a whole bag of chips or the last apple. He never buys apples, why would you eat a persons last apple??? He told me the other day "I'm going to eat the rest of your carrots". Well thanks for the warning!!!! NOT. I told him next time he goes to the store he needs to buy some carrots AND some apples...He actually did, much to my great surprise! It's aggravating because I work more than 50 hours a week and take care of the house, pets, etc, etc and I hate going grocery shopping. He shops too, so if you know you want apples, well then buy some apples or carrots or chips or whatever was the thing you ate the very last bit of that you didn't buy!! Humphhh! OH and puhlease don't get me started on the cereal...

Exactly.

You're lucky you've got one that likes stores. My reclusive DH really just does NOT. Enough so that he can overcome the cookie craving -when it's Thursday, one day's worth of lunches for two kids = 4 cookies and there's only 4 left- so that he isn't forced to go to the store to replace what he gobbled. Instead, he grabs a banana, apple, carrots (and my homemade ranch, good if I do say so)... etc.

I think letting kids get all the fruits, veggies, water, etc they want... and on occasion getting a junky treat IS teaching them good habits... but I'm not going to drive to the store for the sole purpose of buying a candy bar... I'll grab one while I'm there, tuck it away, and when they've done a good job eating, doing chores, etc then it's a nice surprise and no extra work since I had it on hand.

Why do I need to share my Salt Water Taffy that I get once a year with my family who does not even savor them. They try all the flavors and spit them into the garbage if they don't like it. They havn't touched my taffy this year cuz they could never find it. Why do I need to share my Godiva Chocolates I got as a present? When someone gets a special treat it is theirs unless they want to share.

SAVOR. That is a great word! DD is 9 now but when she was about 6, she asked for one of my Dove chocolates. I gave her one, she ripped it open, popped it in her mouth, chewed and swallowed and .01 seconds later, through chocolate drool asked for another one.

Yea...that'll happen. lol

So, I taught her that word...Savor. I showed her how to smell the chocolate, let it sit on her tongue, feel how smooth it was and how much yummier it was from the 1st piece.

She got it!! So, most of the time, I dont mind sharing with the troops, but sometimes...it ALL mine... mua haa haaa.

My kids are allowed to have healthy snacks/foods/drinks any time without asking. Treats and junk food, they need to ask first. I usually put the healthy treats on their level so they can grab them whenever they want and I put the sugary treats and junk food out of reach. It's not hidden, they know it's there, but it's not up for grabs at any time.

If I can see a certain treat is going fast and I really wanted some, I will set aside a serving for myself.

I keep my expensive chocolate in my desk. The kids know it's there, but it's off limits since it was usually a gift from my husband. I don't steal their goodies from their Christmas stockings and Easter baskets - they can't steal my goodies either.
