I found this little guy flating in the dog's water bucket this afternoon.

Seems to have a small wing injury on this side, but I doubt it was his demise.

Male house sparrow, very common and actually a non-native species (harmful to native species). Poor guy, though, I wonder what happened. Is there a window above the bowl?

We use to call them English sparrows--but they're a finch. One of the few unprotected species of songbird since they, along with starlings, are invasive.

We had an Ovenbird smash into our window this morning.

Maybe he was trying to get a drink and fell in?

Nope, the water bucket is on the north side of the house to keep it in the shade most of the day during the summertime - no windows on that side of the house.

I've heard about the bad finches, but I really can't recognize them.

When I lived in SC, I came home one day to find a dead Cedar Waxwing in my driveway. No sign of injury and he was still warm and movable. I cried over it, but it was a beautiful bird; their feathers are so smooth and lovely.

Very true. They are known to build multiple nests at one time with the female choicing the one she likes best. I spend a good part of the spring and summer emptying blue bird boxes along a blue bird trail of these nest (plus the 3 boxes here at the house)
