Do you like just to sit and watch your flock be chickens?

Just came in from my chicken de-stressing session. I LOVE watching them. Our routine is that I let them out every evening for an hour or so right before dusk and they hunt and peck around while I watch, I release multiple coops/runs at once so the little ones get to meet the big ones but can run away, etc. and they all go home when I pull out the kitchen scrap bucket.

I love my chicken free-range time, and yes, I have a chair to partake in comfort as well.

I just got home from painting for 3 days, got some really good paintings, but the first thing I did when I got home was go watch Chicken TV. I took them 1/2 spaggetti squash and watched them devour it in about 45 minutes. Now I can deal with the world again....back to drive the school bus in the morning

There's a lot of stress in my life.

And my decision to get back into chickens has accomplished the goal I had set out of easing that stress.

It's not so much chickens as husbandry. I don't have a lot of time to set and watch them, though I enjoy it when the opportunity presents itself. But each day's tending of them is rewarding. Standing in the cool morning air listening to the sound of a wide-open spigot running into the inner can of the double-wall waterer, the chuckles of the girls as I move among them tending to the feeder and waterer, that soft yet firm feel of the litter under my feet as I move around the coop . . . all of those and other sensations take me back to a time when my life was much less complicated.

Yeah, they're daily chores but not a burden of any sort. I look forward to that time each day.

Hours are lost in my day just sitting in my plastic adirondack chair watching them pick around my lawn. I don't even mow anymore because I want to leave them more critters and weeds for them to eat when they free-range. I even nod off occasionally only to be awakened by a curious bird pecking at my fingers in search of a snack, or perhaps they think I'm dead and want first dibs.

It's a nice break from a demanding day.

I've had that happen too... and thought the same thing.

This morning from 6:40 until 7:10 I just sat and watched them out in the run. Very relaxing... and I loved picking up the 6 different colored eggs out of the nest boxes this afternoon. It's still hotter than blazes out there so I came right back into the house.... ah, fall in Phoenix.

My friend owns chickens, but she's not that into them. I guess she's always been impatient. Whenever I'm at her house, all I want to do is chicken TV. She just doesn't get it...
