These aren't the best photos because I shot threw a window with grubby child handprints on them lol, but these are who's visiting us today.

I see a Black Capped Chickadee and a Tufted Titmouse. I'm not sure what the other one is in the 4th photo. Maybe a nuthatch or something?

Hey all! A Merlin tried to strike a Mourning Dove at my birdfeeder today!! It's the only bird I could find in my books that matches what I saw. Too small and slender to be a hawk, not even a juvenile hawk. This guy was very streamlined and the markings really match all the pics I've found of a Merlin though they're only supposed to be in Ohio while migrating.. but I'm pretty darned sure.

It came whipping in FAST but since I have lots of cover and escape routes by my feeders everyone got away and he landed on the ground, (wall of evergreens meant he had to land, couldn't swoop back up) and then took off and perched in a beech tree looking very disgruntled over the miss. I got a VERY good look at him from my kitchen window. He turned and ruffled up his feathers and then flew off to a higher perch to watch some more, but never struck again.

One downy woodpecker who was on a peanut cage feeder just stayed where he was absolutely FROZEN in place hugging flat against the cage the whole time the Merlin was there. Guess he couldn't get away when the other birds sounded the alarm, so he just stayed stock still.

It was pretty impressive, I'm both glad and sorry he missed his mark. Hope he decides my feeders aren't too good a place to hunt, cause I want to keep all the birds coming, but it sure was exciting to see it the way I did. I’d just paused and was watching a pair of male cardinals bicker at each other and when he came in I could hear the sound through the window! I got to see it ALL.
