Do you need bedding in the summer months?

I was having a problem keeping my wood shavings dry so I cleaned them all out and have left just the wood floor. Now it doesn't stink and is so easy to clean. Do the hens need wood shavings or is it okay to keep them on the bare floor during the hot months of summer?

I think they need some kind of a place to take a dirt bath and be able to cool off, so if they free range a lot it might be ok as long as it is clean and well aired.

I would be concerned about them jumping down off a roost and not having anything soft to land on. Are your chickens heavy breeds? If so, I would definitely put some bedding back in to prevent any injuries to their feet or legs (ie., bumblefoot). I have Buff Orpingtons and they certainly make quite a "plop" when they come down off the roost!

I'd especially recommend bedding during the summer. Any moisture plus warmth = problems. Try using kiln-dried bedding. It absorbs moisture and odors.
