Do you sell eggs to your friends & neighbors - or give away?

It's probably a matter of how many eggs you collect each day. I get 3 dozen or so. I can't give that many away.........even if I want to......which I don't.

I would be feeding them back to the girls. I make about 150 a month which gives my girls a cushy life....and me a few eggs...I really don't eat that many. So, it pays for expenses and extras for the girls........and it's my hobby, and I enjoy it.

Most people on this forum sell between 2 and 3 dollars a dozen, but I was in the market last night and a dozen organic eggs were 4.75 a dozen. I couldn't believe it.

I'd like to start selling them when I get more hens. Right now, I give them to two of my neighbors who have been very good to me (one lets me ride her horses, one has helped me with my tractor, etc) and give them to friends at work on occasion. No one really asks or is pushy about it, but everyone is VERY happy to receive them when it is their turn. It would be nice to get some money to pay for the cost of feed, though.

Biddeacres that is a gorgeous hen!

I barter my eggs, a fellow has a big garden and we trade veggies for eggs. One fellow I gave eggs to for a while, I just told him one day I would need some feed money. He was very nice about it and now pays me. My one neighbor pays me ahead of time so I can just drop them off. These days it's not expected to get something for free. I wouldn't take my neighbors veggies for free! And to top that off he helped me build my chicken house.

I sell my eggs to a store any extras go to family & friends. I also fed the pigs extra eggs before they went to "finishing school"

I sell some, I barter some (guitar lessons for my son and haircuts for all of us) and I give some to the local food pantry.

I sell my eggs for $1.50 but I think I might have to raise my price. Especially after reading that a lot of people sell them for $2.

Hmm. This is a lot of good discussion! I still feel weird about selling them. I don't have enough to sell them regularly. If I had a bigger space and more chickens, I would sell eggs. But it's like -- ok, every 5th week, I might have enough eggs for you to buy 1/2 dozen. So I think it is better to just give a surprise 1/2 dozen eggs once in a while.

I do ask for food scraps or other chicken treats in return.

My next door neighbors let me free range the chickens on their yard. Our yards adjoin. We are very close together - you can't really tell where my yard ends and their yard begins. We have raised beds that we have designed so that the paths align.

My other neighbors let me shovel snow off my driveway onto their property. This is a very big help to me.

My other friends, I give them eggs once in a while.

I think I'll keep going this way. Otherwise, I'd sell eggs for $1 per 1/2 dozen; maybe $2 a week.

I think good will and friendship are worth more than $2 a week -- even in this economy, or maybe especially in this economy.
