Curious question an

d looking for feedback on whether or not you separate your birds when treating for sour crop. We just had a blissful month of healthy girls. This morning Blacky (Australorp 1 1/2 yr layer) has a watery swollen crop once again (crop was checked before and after keeping her in a cage overnight). The last round ended up causing big issues when it came to reintroducing her back into the coop. I don't want to experience that again (she doesn't either!). I can remove her to give meds and treatment but hoping there has been successful treatment of sour crop / impacted crop while keeping birds in the same coop. I'm not concerned about it being contagious. She is a scavenger and eating constantly which is my only concern with the wood chips, dirt, sand, roots, bugs, worms on the coop floor. She's a chicken, she's going to eat these things, right?

Thanks for your feedback and advice

I haven’t experienced that issue yet ( knock on wood ), but I’d put her in a small dog kennel with the flock , she needs a break and probably doesn’t feel 100%, I get the reintroducing stress , but if she stays with them that shouldn’t be an issue....

Every chicken keeper should have a portable “ sick/recovery pen” with food / water dishes and a roost

Good luck

I’ll just add if they picked on her last time , she could have still been sick ... they pick on the weak

Absolutely yes
Cause sour crop cause laziness and weakness and if she live with the flock everyone start peck on her to death

So giving her warm quite place is nice also have u tried fennel tea in sour crop works wonders

i learned the hard way that i should have had my plan in place prior to an illness. im all set now, but at the time, it added a lot of xtra work and stress for me and the girls.

As long as she's easy to catch and treat I would keep her with the flock even if it's in a cage like posted above

very easy to catch. she's a total lover and the door is her way to the grass so she'll be there. today the other three girls had time in the yard and she had quiet time in garage.

ill try the kennel in coop and the fennel tea. I'll also post some pictures of the coop. recently it was split into two sides.
