Do you suppose it is wrong

What I would worry more about is the torturing part. Butchering to have food for you table is (or was) natural. The future serial killers like the torturing as much if not more than the actual killing. Now if your kids want to drag it out and slooowly wield the knife <evil grin> start saving now for the psych evaluations.

I love killing chickens (and turkeys and pigs and fish and......) so why wouldnt they? My kids do too and help - well, hinder a bit too as they are still young - when time comes to kill and clean something. I think its just the thrill of the hunt without the hunt really so dont worry about it and by all means, let them help or do it themselves so they dont grow out of it!

Mind you, I once yelled at the dog (after she once again tried to kill me going through a door too fast) "Next time you do that I'm going to cook you for dinner you STUPID BLOODY DOG!!!" and turned around to find all three of the kids in tears, wailing NOOOOOOOO PLEASE dont COOK her for DINNER MUMMY

So I dont think a joy in killing animals for food is indicative of a psychotic personality lol

Actually, I think my children are psychotic, with or without chickens. I was playing, they do take it seriously, and it just suprised me that they were not more reserved about the idea of it, especially the 13 year old girl. I will let them help, actually, I am hoping boy child and hubby do the gross stuff, and I will pluck and process. i really don't want to kill or gut.

I do think it is a good experience for them, not neccesarily just the killing, but raising it, caring for it, and doing it humanely and kindly. I also think on slaughter day the chickens deserve a prayer, and thanks to God for providing them. As a former city girl, I am actually very much enjoying teaching my kids a different way.

Some people enjoy killing. That is why states make so much freakin' money selling hunting licenses every year. My SO and his bestfriend are both avid hunters. I've been rabbit hunting. I've killed two chickens and had to put my cat down once. I cried and cried and cried. Plucking, gutting, and cleaning really doesn't bother me. But I DO NOT enjoy taking a life for any reason. But sometimes this is the best option. And it is easier to cook and eat something if it is already dead.

I don't think that most hunters go hunting because they enjoy killing. The killing is just a small part of a process that is long ingrained in our hunter-gatherer genes. Just as you have a strong nurturing instinct, I believe there is still very much a a strong instinct in modern man to hunt and provide.

After moving back to Wisconsin this summer, our 15 year old son has had the chance to go duck hunting and small game hunting for the first time. My wife was sure he "didn't have the heart for it" and that he was too much of a softy to actually kill and prepare game. He took right to it. It's the thrill of the hunt, whether one actually kills anything or not.

For some people yes. But, then there are those who do it for sport/trophy hunting. He has talked about wanting to go bear hunting just because we wants to kill a bear. And killing raccoons, opposums, chipmunks, small birds, etc. Not to eat but just for the sport. It sickens me personally but some people enjoy it. Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread.

Hijack away, don't matter to me. My husbands rule to my son is if you kill it, you eat it. With an exception to the wolf rats, which you can just kill.
