Do your hens sing the egg song on "off" days? (I.E. no egg)

Two of our girls have been laying pretty regularly lately, and have this whole ritual of who goes in first, the other yelling at her to hurry up, and then coming out and singing for like 10 minutes to let us know that they are finished. Well, today, after completing their little session and beginning their duet, my son goes to get the eggs, and there's nothin..

What gives? Is it just a habit now to sing the song, do yours sing even on days that they don't lay?

I've been wondering this same thing for the past two days. My Henny Penny has laid daily since she started and the past two days she goes to the nest - sits and sings for an hour then comes and lets me know she's done and then when I go look there's nothing there. What gives???

I only have 1 layer and she has only laid 6 eggs in 7 days .. so 1 off day . And yes she sang and sang ALL day , on the off day . She has also started singing the egg song for HOURS before she lays and then no song after . I think she is trying to trick me , so she can keep her eggs . I always take them , even if she is still on them and tell her those are my eggs . Sneaky little chick . Her laying "ritual' seems to get longer every day ...

HA HA, we are in the same boat! My little Miss Margaret (Buff Orp) sang for almost 3 WEEKS before she started actually laying, and now that she's laying it seems like her song is longer each day, lol.

She first screams at our Bantam to get outta her nest (although other nests are vacant), then she sings while she waits, to announce to every one that she's goin in. Then marches out in song when she's finished and encourages the little bantam cochin to sing (more like chirp compared to her) along. I think she's training the bantam to sing longer as well, cuz she never used to sing, it's kinda funny hearing her next to Margaret.

none of mine have laid yet but my BR was acting like she was trying to lay in the nest box and one of my reds started singing and eggs song AT her I have no idea what that was about! she nested for almost an hour and then just got out like she wasn't doing anything!

Mine will sing for others laying their egg. Then we have a chorus and everyone joins in.

yep, yep, yep! I had one that sang the song, loudly, most of the day, from the time she was 12 weeks old! Now that she's laying, she DOESN'T sing the song! Odd little creatures....

None of mine that are actually in the nest box sing an egg song. It's the other hens watching that are noisy.

Hilarious! At least I know we're not the only ones! I just thought we had some crazy chicken. And for a while I thought (and still wonder) that they are training me. Cuz I noticed after a while of my BO singing and me running out there with treats trying to shut her up (because of close neighbors), it started seeming like she would just yell for a treat, lol. As soon as I'd come through the gate with the "treat bowl" she'd shut up and come running
