Do Your Neighbors Think You Are The "Odd" Duck?

OMG, me too. I either wanted to be a local grocery store, like have a garden and sell my veggies and fruit and or ducklings, or a duck rehabillitator, or duck rescuer, or a pastry chef, YUM doughnuts...

Don't let what others say or think have a negative impact on you & the way you feel about your ducks! YOU will turn out to be a well-adjusted adult while they are still struggling with their direction in life. Focus on what makes YOU happy and if you make some extra money with it, all the better. You are very enterprising at your age and should be proud of it. And the fact that you love to do the dirty work? I always heard that if you do something you like, it won't seem like work!

at first the girls at work thought I was nuts for getting chickens and ducks, now they think its pretty cool everyone asks all the time how they are doing. My sister thinks Im crazy she says she wouldnt want the extra work, but I tell her they are no more work than dogs and cats and she has one of each. My mom who is almost 80 came out the other day and loved it. She said she was surprised how clean everything was and how friendly they were. She said as a kid her grandma had chickens and they would chase the kids and peck them and that their coop smelled bad in the summer. She loved how the ducks play in the pond, she said they are like little kids swimmimg and splashing. Im just glad they didnt decide to mate in front of her.

My Husband hates my ducks, he thinks they're noisy stinky useless creatures. He agreed to me buying ducks because he thought I'd put them on the pond and that's that...noooooooo not me, I built them a pen, converted a huge dog hunting box into a "bedroom" for them complete with locking door and tin roof. I feed them and buy treats for them and nurse them and hug/snuggle them and sit out in the pen with them every morning and evening. I also took a lawnchair down to the pond so I can visit with them there during the day. My inlaws think I'm nuts and have fun razzing me about it. Let 'em razz, they're missing out on the joy those feathered darlings can bring into your life. I LOVE MY DUCKS!!

Keep on dreaming, because this may be your call down the road. Who know perhaps you become a vet, a wild life rehabilitator or researcher. I see the long list of animals you have, including the "annoying" one.

Looks like you should pick a profession that includes animals. Perhaps you become a duck breeder.

A neighbour asked me what my ducks and chickens were for, just last week. I compared them to fish, but more fun to watch. She still didn't get it. Should have said that I could get eggs without having to kill them, unlike fish roe.
Yes, they can be a lot of work for me - especially right now when I have a duck, a drake and a pullet in separate cages preparing for showing at the Fall Fair.
Housing is at a premium right now since my 5-6 week ducklings are in yet another cage.
Oh, and the hauling of feed and bedding. I'm not supposed to lift heavy objects but I'm used to carrying 50 lb bags of feed so I don't consider those heavy.

Know what? Until a few years ago I didn't have the slightest interest in chickens. Then I moved here and had the space so I got 5 ISA Browns, just for fun. Now I have 1 ISA Brown (ancient old Granny enjoying her retirement, totally useless) 2 wonderful MuttHens, 2 Australorps, a Barred Rock, a Buff Orp and 5 RIRs.
Even when I started with chickens I had no interest in ducks. Then I was offered a couple of drakes for free (runners) so I took them. When 1 was killed by a raccoon and the other started going after the chickens I got some ducks for him. Then I bought an incubator and hatched 3. Then I saw all those lovely fertile eggs and I had a broody hen so she hatched 2 out for me. Another broody, more eggs and another 2 ducklings.

Why stop now? My friends, family and neighbours think I'm nuts and I'm just confirming that.
