I have a giant rooster of unknown breed that crows very softly a few times starting at 6 am and never after 7am...he is also extremely docile, lets other chickens steal food right before he grabs it off the ground, and just walks away from any confrontation. I have a few chicks just getting ready to start showing for sure what their sex is, but it appears that 3 or 4 of the 7 are in fact cockerels, and I am going out today to get a silkie rooster that a lady has to get rid of because she is in city limits, anyway....My older rooster makes a great pet, eating out of my hands and what not, but he doesn't make a very good rooster. He will call his hens in if he senses danger, or scratch hitting the ground in the coop, but he won't even watch out for the new hen and her chicks. Getting the silky probably isn't the best idea I have had because here soon I will be simply over run with roosters, but we'll turn a few into chicken nuggets and it will all be alright. There is no way I could ever eat the big fella though. He is just too sweet...blah blah blah....an old rooster is what you need. Because mine is old...and quiet and easy and calm all the time. I have never seen him get flustered at anything. Not me, not my husband or kids, not the dogs or cats...nothing seems to fluster him.

Some of the new chicks though keep posturing and puffing up at any and everything. Lol.
