Perhaps it was a hiker that went a little heavy on the Nature Valley bars?

I would guess that it is bear scat. Chances are that you will never see it and that it was just passing through.

On the safe side.... remove any bird-feeders or other possible food sources for a while and make noise when you are in the yard.

It is bear and I'd say passing through by the looks of it foraging for berries

since it's Fall. Seen lots of that picking blackberries around the cabin believe me!

If you have bears in your area, tie bells on your shoes, and get some pepper spray.

It is also important that you learn the difference between black bears and grizzly bears. Black bears are small, shy, and leave earthy poo. Grizzly bears are large, hairy, ornery, and leave poo that has bells and pepper spray in it. Yours looks like there might be some pepper spray in there. Ask that dog that's sniffin' it.
