I believe PurpleChicken has a great deal to say on this subject.

It is very cruel when people sell dyed chicks or baby rabbits on Easter. The sales people dye the chicks and baby rabbits with bright colors that appeal to children, and it's hard to resist a cute little baby chick/rabbit that is colorful. That's why they do it. But usually people will bye a baby dyed chick or two for their kids as a gift. But when the chick(s) become adult and aren't "cute" any more to them, and to them it's just another animal, they will stop caring for the chicken(s) and will either abandon it somewhere, or bring it to the slaughter house.

True story I read one time:

There was an event and some people were selling lots of dyed chicks. So, some people bought one for their kids. They cared for him and loved him, but when he was a full-grown rooster, they got bored of him and dropped him off in a trash can. Luckily, a nice lady found him and brought him home and she nursed him back to health. He now lives in a loving home, which he deserves, with an owner who takes care of him.

In my opinion, these "fun" events where they sell dyed baby chicks are not good at all.

I'm with 77horses on this.

Whether it hurts the chicks or not many people impulse buy those cute little colored chicks. Some of those people may become wonderful chicken owners and members of a brilliant forum like BYC; but, most of them dump the chick within a few months and probably didn't take proper care of it while they did have it.

they shouldnt sell ANY animal a week before ANY holiday. theres just as many if not WAY more animals that are'nt dyed that are used the same,,, as an impulse buy........ and whats wrong with dyeing ya chick,,, its 1 thing to try to sell 100 of them,, but for yourself, and a few for family,, theres NO difference in dyed or not,,,, how many MORE stories of abandoned animals are there out there thats not dyed animals.

I don't like how people sell 100's of dyed chicks to people who know nothing about properly caring about them, but it sounds like a cool idea to dye your own chicks for yourself or your family, or someone who knows about raising baby chicks properly and will not abandon them, such as a friend, etc. I think that dying baby chicks and rabbits if cool, as long as you know how to care for them, etc.
