Does any one use ivermectin in chickens ?

If you start from about page 15 of this thread you can read about the effects of permethrin on mites. For the red mites I can vouch that it does work but you have to kill them where they live. Be careful with that stuff, it's definitely not a natural remedy as so many believe.

In it I found this:
"Macrocyclic lactones (e.g. ivermectin, moxidectin), whether for oral delivery or as injectables do not control northern fowl mites: the effective dose would be very close to the dose that is toxic for the birds. Moreover, in most countries macrocyclic lactones are no approved for use on poultry."

This recommends repeat dosing 2 and 4 weeks later for current infestation. For parrots and Homing Pigeons (another ivermectin product) repeat dosing is weekly for two additional weeks.

FYI- different countries can have different instructions for the same product depending on testing and licensing. It can be worthwhile to use different compendiums. Personally I like NOAH over Merck for product info.

I suspect that the product above is actually the .05% topical (5mg/ml). One drop is not an accurate way to measure.

Depends where you are from I suppose .
The table notes dosage for ' birds ' in general , yet this one clearly states that ivermectin is not tolerated well by parrots, parakeets, canaries or finches.

Btw, we use ivermectin based products on our cattle and horses so I'm not anti- ivermectin.
Just can't see any point in using it on my birds if it is infective on internal and most external parasites when there is a real chance of poisoning.

I used Ivermectin for a year before I knew better. Newer folks don't understand that when you have a mite or louse infestation, you must treat the coop premises as well as the birds. Ivermectin does nothing for lice, and nothing for mite eggs that hatch and re-infest the birds. Topical sprays of the emulsified concentrate type are the most effective. A few types contain Permethrin or Rabon-Vapona and have a 30 day residual.

You can dilute ivermectin to make dosing easier if you give it orally. Fruit juice, molasses, etc can be used- just remember to periodically reshake it when measuring it out. For my dogs I add their dose to a peanut butter sandwich and give everyone their piece. Just a thought.

Yes, one could do that, they just need to have basic math skills.

DR Rob only recommends the use of ivermectin on birds not being used for meat or eggs.
